"A breath of fresh air" is changing the face of the highlands.

As a particularly disadvantaged commune, with a population mainly consisting of the Muong, Mong, and Dao ethnic groups, Trung Son commune has made spectacular breakthroughs in recent years thanks to the practical mobilization and dissemination of patriotic emulation within the community, transforming difficulties into driving forces for development and changing the face of the highland region.

The "miracle" of cinnamon trees and the aspiration to escape poverty.

Recognizing that patriotic emulation is not just a slogan, the Party Committee and government of Trung Son commune have concretized it into movements directly linked to the interests of the people. Typical examples include the "Emulation in Excellent Production and Business," "Joining Forces to Build New Rural Areas," and "All People United in Building a Culturally Rich Life" movements. The commune selects exemplary models and outstanding individuals to commend, creating a ripple effect. The "hands-on" approach, using real people and real work to mobilize support, has helped these emulation movements penetrate deep into every hamlet and reach every household.

The most important economic driving force in Trung Son is the emulation movement to develop the hill and forest economy, with a focus on cinnamon trees. With a large area of forest land, the commune has encouraged people to change their crop structure, replacing low-value crops with cinnamon trees. A silent competition among families regarding cinnamon planting area and cultivation techniques has transformed Trung Son into the "cinnamon capital." To date, the entire commune has more than 1,400 households participating in cinnamon cultivation with a total area of over 2,800 hectares. Cinnamon trees not only green the barren hills but also provide a stable source of income, helping many households earn hundreds of millions of dong each year.

Ms. Dinh Thi Linh, Secretary of the Party Branch of Nhoi area and one of the pioneers in bringing cinnamon trees to the area, said: "My family was one of the first households encouraged by the State to plant cinnamon and received support of 300 seedlings, intercropped with cassava to generate short-term income to support long-term growth. By 2012, with 2 hectares of cinnamon ready for harvest, my family earned about 300 million VND. Recognizing the clear potential, I continued to expand the area to 5 hectares, and at the same time encouraged other households in the area to switch to cinnamon cultivation. To date, more than 80% of households in Nhoi area have become involved with cinnamon trees. Many families who used to live a nomadic lifestyle have now stabilized their production and are gradually rising out of poverty. The entire area currently has more than 85 hectares of cinnamon, which both provides income and contributes to raising awareness of forest protection in the community."

In the Dang area, cinnamon trees have proven to be a significant economic asset. The entire area currently has 95 households with 370 inhabitants, comprising three ethnic groups: Muong, Dao, and Mong. 100% of the households cultivate cinnamon, covering a total area of over 200 hectares, of which approximately 100 hectares are already yielding stable harvests. The average income from cinnamon is around 200 million VND per hectare. Thanks to cinnamon, the Dang area now has only 5 poor households, making it the area with the lowest poverty rate in the commune.

The patriotic emulation movement in Trung Son has left a strong mark on infrastructure development. When the vital Xuan An - Trung Son road was implemented, the "Emulation in Donating Land for Road Construction" movement received enthusiastic support. Hundreds of households did not hesitate to demolish fences and cut down valuable trees to give up land for the common infrastructure. This solidarity helped to resolve the traffic bottleneck, paving the way for goods and agricultural products to reach the mountainous region. In addition, the cultural landscape of the commune has also flourished, with 15 out of 15 residential areas achieving the title of "Cultural Area". In particular, the Dang resettlement area has become a model of civilized living amidst the mountains, with synchronized infrastructure and free Wi-Fi serving the information needs of the people.

Towards sustainable development

The success of the emulation movement in Zhongshan is a lesson in harnessing the internal strength of the people. The government not only initiated the movement but also supported it, creating mechanisms for people to unleash their creativity and sense of responsibility.

During the period 2025-2030, the commune will focus on effectively implementing two breakthroughs: "Developing socio-economic infrastructure and digital infrastructure associated with ecotourism" and "Developing the hill and forest economy, with a focus on cinnamon trees," with key solution groups. Priority will be given to mobilizing and integrating resources to invest in transportation, electricity, water, schools, healthcare , etc., linked to the construction of new rural areas and the development of ecotourism and community tourism in the Dang area and Ngoi Ganh lake..., combined with investment in several projects such as traditional stilt houses, traditional cultural and artistic performance venues, and check-in points in the Dang area; developing handicraft villages, homestays, and night markets... At the same time, the commune will continue to expand the area for planting cinnamon and bamboo shoots, promote deep processing, and build a production-consumption chain, striving to reach 3,000 hectares of cinnamon by 2030.

Comrade Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet, Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Trung Son Commune, stated: The emulation and reward work has always been closely supervised and systematically implemented by the Party Committee and the People's Committee of Trung Son Commune, linking it with key political tasks and adapting to the practical situation of each stage.
