Before the iPhone reshaped the mobile market, BlackBerry was the most "fashionable" phone. At its peak in the early 2000s, BlackBerry dominated over 50% of the US smartphone market and 20% of the global market.
However, the arrival of the iPhone marked a new era, causing physical keyboard phones to gradually disappear from the market. Ultimately, BlackBerry ceased support for its classic phone models in 2022.
However, the story doesn't end there. BlackBerry is being "revived" by Gen Z, who are sharing vintage phones they find on TikTok – ironically, these phones don't actually support the TikTok app.
On TikTok, young users are enthusiastically sharing their personal experiences of owning a BlackBerry. "Buying a BlackBerry Bold just because I like it," one user posted, holding their old phone bought for $40 .

Another person wrote upon unboxing a used BlackBerry Bold 9900: "This is something I never thought I'd say, especially not in 2025. I have a BlackBerry."
"My first phone was an iPhone in sixth grade, so I never had the chance to own a BlackBerry like I'd always wanted. It's always been a dream of mine," the user further explained.
Currently, hashtags like “#flipphone” on TikTok are attracting over 35,000 posts, while the hashtag specifically for BlackBerry boasts over 125,000. These videos , often garnering hundreds of thousands of views, document users' journey back to basic phones, including models like the BlackBerry Classic Q20 and BlackBerry Curve.
According to Fast Company , Gen Z is participating in a movement called "Digital Detox Summer," in which users temporarily set aside their modern smartphones to turn to classic technology devices in order to relax and disconnect from contemporary technologies.
Specifically, a TikTok video that garnered 6.4 million views read: "POV: You buy a BlackBerry in 2025 because your iPhone is ruining your life." In the comments, many expressed agreement: "This is the pinnacle of technology," or "BlackBerry has a chance to make a spectacular comeback."
On the Reddit forum, the enthusiasm for BlackBerry phones and classic tech products has also been met with great enthusiasm.
A Reddit user named “coldheartedsigma” shared a (now deleted) post hinting at a BlackBerry comeback. While some expressed skepticism, others couldn't hide their excitement. One comment read: "Please be real." Another added: "I would be very interested if this actually happened."
First launched in 1999, the BlackBerry 850 was a two-way pager with email capabilities, and was the precursor to later BlackBerry phones.
This line of phones has undergone several improvements, with notable versions such as the BlackBerry Curve launched in 2007, the BlackBerry Flip 8220 released in 2008, and the BlackBerry Key One - a smartphone with a physical keyboard, launched in 2017.
