New leaks from Weibo are causing a stir in the mobile photography community, suggesting that Apple may include a DSLR-style teleconverter on the iPhone 18 Pro.
This is an additional set of supplementary lenses that are attached to extend the focal length of the main lens, allowing users to photograph extremely distant objects without changing lenses.
According to leaker "Smart Pikachu," Apple is evaluating the possibility of incorporating a similar mechanism into the iPhone 18 Pro's camera system. It would function similarly to third-party interchangeable lenses that users often attach to their iPhones to enhance zoom capabilities.
This allows the iPhone to achieve greater optical zoom, directly challenging Android competitors, especially Samsung, which is currently leading in this area.
Apple won't be the first company to support telephoto lenses. Many other Android manufacturers, such as Oppo and Vivo, also support this accessory on their highest-end smartphones.
However, adding a magnifying lens comes with physical trade-offs that Apple will have to address. Specifically, the teleconverter will reduce the amount of light reaching the sensor. This means that the quality of night photography – a source of pride for the iPhone – will be significantly degraded.
Furthermore, adding lenses means that light has to pass through more layers, which can easily lead to loss of detail, reduced contrast, and even "magnify" the smallest flaws of the main lens.
Currently, the rumors are only in the "evaluation" stage. Therefore, the likelihood of this technology appearing on the iPhone 18 Pro is quite low.
Apple's process from concept to mass production typically takes a considerable amount of time, especially considering the device is expected to be released as early as 2026.
