World Cup hero cries because his mother is absent. |
Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha became the hero for Cape Verde in their stunning 0-0 draw against Spain in their opening match of Group H at the 2026 World Cup on the night of June 15th. However, Vozinha's joy was not complete. Sharing his feelings after the match, the veteran goalkeeper emotionally revealed that his family could not travel to the United States to support him.
"I cried after the match. When I was little, I grew up with my grandparents, but they passed away a few years ago and couldn't see this day. My mother also couldn't come to the US because of visa and cost issues. We didn't have time to complete all the procedures," Vozinha said, her voice choked with emotion.
Nevertheless, he affirmed that the recent achievement was a gift for all the people of Cape Verde. "This is a thank you to everyone back home. We worked very hard to achieve this moment. This is a proud day for the country," the 40-year-old goalkeeper shared.
At the Mercedes-Benz Arena, Cape Verde pulled off the biggest surprise of the tournament so far by holding the reigning European champions to a draw. The team from the island nation of just over half a million people stood firm against the immense pressure from the Spanish stars, with goalkeeper Vozinha playing the biggest role.
At the age of 40, the Chaves (Portugal) goalkeeper made seven saves, repeatedly denying opponents excellent scoring opportunities. His outstanding performance earned him the Man of the Match award.
Few people know that Vozinha only began his professional football career at the age of 25. From an unknown player who wandered through Moldova, Slovakia, and Cyprus, he has now become an icon of Cape Verde on the biggest football stage on the planet.
