Madibo received a harsh punishment. |
The incident occurred during the match between Qatar and Canada in Group B at BC Place (Vancouver) on June 19th. In the 53rd minute, Madibo made a tackle from behind on Kone and immediately received a direct red card.
Initially, the 29-year-old midfielder seemed unaware of the seriousness of the situation. However, upon learning that his opponent had suffered a serious injury, he clutched his head in shock and left the field in tears.
In this match, Canada secured a resounding 6-0 victory, while Qatar endured a disastrous day, finishing the game with only nine players on the field. Before Madibo was sent off, Homam Ahmed had already left the field in the first half, leaving Julen Lopetegui's team at a numerical disadvantage.

As for Kone, the Canadian midfielder suffered fractures to both his tibia and fibula in his left leg. The Sassuolo player received emergency medical attention on the pitch, was then stretchered off the field, and immediately transported to the hospital for surgery. This serious injury also means that Kone's journey at the 2026 World Cup is over.
Following the match, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee ruled that Madibo was suspended for five matches for a serious foul. This is also the harshest penalty handed down since the start of the 2026 World Cup. The Qatar Football Association can still appeal the decision.
A few days after the incident, Madibo performed a heartwarming gesture by visiting Kone. In images shared by the Qatar Football Association, the Canadian player, in a wheelchair, still embraced his opponent, bringing one of the saddest moments of the group stage to a close.
