Thomas Tuchel drew attention for not including Trent Alexander-Arnold in his 35-man England squad for the March friendly matches.
Explaining his selection, Tuchel emphasized that it was purely a professional decision. He admitted that dropping Alexander-Arnold, as well as Ollie Watkins and Luke Shaw, was not easy.
However, the German coach wants to maintain consistency with what he has observed recently.
Instead of Alexander-Arnold, Tuchel placed his trust in Tino Livramento, Djed Spence, and Jarell Quansah. According to him, these players performed well between September and November and were a better fit for the current squad structure.
Tuchel also affirmed that he understands Alexander-Arnold's value very well. The manager had faced and suffered many times from the English defender's creativity when he played for Liverpool. However, he believes that the current time is an opportunity to evaluate other options.
"Trent is a big name, a great talent. But we have a clear view of him and want to broaden our assessment to include other players," Tuchel shared.
This decision partly reflects Tuchel's approach ahead of the 2026 World Cup. He doesn't rely solely on reputation, but focuses on form and tactical suitability at each stage.
Conversely, Sergio Aguero still holds Alexander-Arnold in high regard. The former Argentine striker believes that despite injury problems and not being in his best form at Real Madrid, the defender is still a top-class player and has the potential to succeed.
Being eliminated doesn't mean the door to the World Cup is closed for Alexander-Arnold. But clearly, he will have to improve his form if he wants to return to Tuchel's plans for the crucial stage.
