Ronaldo has not yet recovered from his injury. |
Cristiano Ronaldo was not included in the Portuguese national team's squad for the friendly matches at the end of March, as he had not yet recovered from a hamstring injury. This is an important training camp in preparation for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
The 41-year-old captain suffered a muscle problem while playing for Al Nassr on February 28th. He has been in Madrid for treatment for the past two weeks, but is still not fit enough to play in the matches against Mexico (March 28th) and the USA (March 31st).
Coach Roberto Martinez quickly reassured fans, asserting that Ronaldo's condition was not serious and would not affect his ability to participate in his sixth World Cup.
"It's just a minor muscle injury. We believe he can return in one or two weeks," said coach Martinez. He also emphasized that Ronaldo's fitness level this season remains very good.
Ronaldo's absence opens up opportunities for other options in attack. Joao Felix, who is in excellent form at Al Nassr, is included. Bruno Fernandes has also been called up, having maintained a consistent performance with 7 goals and 16 assists in the domestic league.
Notably, West Ham midfielder Matheus Fernandes received his first call-up to the national team. Real Sociedad's Goncalo Guedes also returned after a long absence since 2022.
Martinez praised Guedes for his versatility and ability to create breakthroughs. He stated that Portugal is looking for different options in attack, in addition to Ronaldo and Goncalo Ramos.
Ronaldo's absence from this training camp is more of a precautionary measure than a cause for concern. With time remaining before the World Cup, Portugal still hopes that CR7 will be in top form when he enters the biggest tournament on the planet.
