Defendant Tran Hong Chuong.

Growing up in a poor family, Tran Hong Chuong (born in 1972, residing in Bac Ha ward, Ha Tinh city) was known from a young age as an intelligent and bright boy. After finishing high school, Chuong passed the entrance exam for the economics major at Hanoi University. To earn money to pursue his dream of attending university, the poor student took on various jobs to make ends meet, from tutoring to heavy manual labor such as working as a construction laborer and carrying loads.

After graduating from university with honors, Chương moved to Ho Chi Minh City to pursue his career. Outperforming nearly 1,000 other candidates through multiple rounds of exams, the recent graduate was successfully recruited into the Information and Trade Center ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ), Ho Chi Minh City Branch. With this admirable achievement, Chương became a source of pride for his family and clan.

A panoramic view of the trial.

While at the peak of his career, an acquaintance in Ha Tinh unexpectedly contacted Chuong. This man asked Chuong to introduce some laborers to work illegally in European countries. Instead of reporting the illegality of the operation, Chuong agreed to join the criminal path due to the overwhelming allure of money. Thus, Chuong was drawn into a spiral of illegal business dealings, with no thought of stopping.

However, as the saying goes, "those who walk in the dark too often will eventually encounter ghosts," and when everything fell apart, Chương bitterly realized he had spiraled down the path of crime. After all his relentless efforts and struggles, driven solely by greed, all Chương received in return was bitter fruit.

With two charges of "Fraudulent appropriation of property" and "Organizing and coercing others to illegally flee abroad," Chương was sentenced by the Supreme People's Court to a total of 24 years in prison.

The prosecutor's representative questioned the defendant.

After entering prison, Chương was entrusted by the prison warden with the responsibility of leading the performing arts group, building movements to serve the propaganda work. Each song and play composed by Chương reflected his innermost feelings, his repentance, and his realization of his past sins. A series of works composed by Chương were highly praised by the warden and fellow inmates for their educational value, awakening the seeds of goodness and leaving behind many valuable lessons.

Chương once dreamed that after his release from prison, he would truly live a useful life and consider it a way of showing gratitude to those who helped him get back on his feet. However, after only 5 years back in normal life, Chương forgot that promise…

People's assessors clarify the roles of those with relevant rights and obligations.

Being intelligent and quick-witted, during the land boom in Ha Tinh, Chuong quickly grasped market demand, regularly researching areas with high profit potential and introducing them to clients. To meet work requirements and need a car for real estate brokerage activities, on February 26, 2022, Chuong went to the shop of Mr. DVQ (born in 1979, Ba Giang village, Viet Tien commune, Thach Ha district) and signed a contract to rent a Kia Morning car for 10 million VND/month.

However, just over a week later, needing money for personal expenses, on March 2, 2022, Chuong mortgaged the rented car to Mr. PNP (born in 1986, residing in Thai Hoa town, Nghe An province) for 110 million VND.

At the first-instance trial presided over by the Thach Ha District People's Court, Tran Hong Chuong testified that, of the 110 million VND he obtained from pawning the car, he paid Mr. Q. an additional 26 million VND to cover the first three months' car rental fees. The remaining amount was used for personal expenses, debt repayment, and as a deposit for speculative land.

Being highly educated, knowledgeable, and above all, having served a long prison sentence, Tran Hong Chuong was very aware of his actions. However, due to a lack of self-control, Chuong succumbed to the allure of money, and once again, he fell into the cycle of crime and imprisonment.

In his final statement before the judges deliberated, Tran Hong Chuong expressed deep concern about his path to rehabilitation. The defendant acknowledged that, despite his willpower and efforts, without integrity and a genuine desire for good, the path to redemption remains distant for individuals like him. For the crime of "Abusing trust to misappropriate property," the Thach Ha District People's Court sentenced Tran Hong Chuong to six years in prison.
