Although not a new dish, recently, mangosteen chicken salad has suddenly caused a "fever" on many travel online forums and quickly created a culinary trend, attracting customers to "catch the trend".
Also because of the attraction of the salad of the same name, green mangosteen - the main ingredient that makes this specialty is also sought after by diners, even though the price is ten times higher than ripe mangosteen.
Not only "storming" in the domestic market, on some groups of Vietnamese people in the US, green mangosteen also attracts a lot of attention and is for sale for 120 USD/kg (more than 2,8 million VND).
Even peeled green mangosteen has a higher price, up to 182 USD for 3,3 lbs (about 4,2 million VND for 1,5 kg).
According to the seller in the US, this is a hand-carried green mangosteen directly from Vietnam, not a chilled product, so it is fresh and quality. In particular, mangosteen is also peeled, put in a vacuum bag, stored in ice to keep its whiteness, crispness and not lose its taste.
When buying, diners just need to process it immediately to make salad or dip it in salt.

Not only in the US, in Canada, green mangosteen is also sold by Vietnamese here for 25 USD/kg (about 590.000 VND), unpeeled type, originating from Lai Thieu (Binh Duong) and 60 USD/kg (about 1,4 million VND) peeled green mangosteen. Customers who want to buy must order 1-2 weeks in advance.
The reason why green mangosteen is so expensive is because of the elaborate preliminary processing and the resulting meat is quite small (Photo: Truc Green).
Despite its expensive price, green mangosteen is still ordered by many overseas Vietnamese who spend a lot of money to enjoy.
Phuc Le (from Texas, USA) said that it is almost impossible to find green mangosteen in supermarkets in the US, so she has to book in advance with an acquaintance who specializes in selling Vietnamese food in the US to "reservation" to buy green mangosteen.
“I grew up in Binh Duong, I am no stranger to ripe mangosteen, but the chicken salad made from green mangosteen only had the opportunity to enjoy a few times when I visited my hometown a few years ago. This dish is very delicious, so even though the price is high, I still try to buy it for the whole family to enjoy,” said Phuc.
However, many people are also afraid of this dish because the price is too high. "I am quite curious about green mangosteen, want to try the mangosteen chicken salad, but such an expensive cost is really too much, so I have to wait until I have the opportunity to return to Vietnam to enjoy it," said Kim Jessi, a Vietnamese living in Florida, USA.
