As one of the pioneering households in developing beekeeping in Tan Thanh commune, Mr. Phung Van Bien from Doan Ket village said: "My family has been raising bees for over 20 years, starting with a small number, only about 5 to 7 colonies, mainly to meet our family's needs. During the process, realizing that the model was suitable for the local conditions, I proactively learned knowledge and experience in beekeeping and colony splitting from books, newspapers, television, and experienced beekeepers to gradually expand the scale and increase the number of colonies. To date, my family has 150 bee colonies. On average, my family harvests 500 to 700 liters of honey each year, bringing in an income of over 100 million VND/year. I find that beekeeping not only provides a stable income for my family but also effectively utilizes the natural flower resources in the area, contributing to increasing the economic value of the hilly forest and fruit orchards."
Not only Mr. Bien's family, but many households in Quyet Tien village have also boldly developed beekeeping. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Trai, from Quyet Tien village, said: "The village has many areas of longan, lychee, and some flower species that are very suitable for beekeeping. Therefore, since 2015, my family has bought 5 bee colonies to raise and placed them in our fruit orchard. During the beekeeping process, I regularly research beekeeping techniques and proactively divide the colonies to expand the scale. Thanks to the abundant natural flower sources, the bee colonies grow and develop well, yielding stable honey production. Currently, my family maintains more than 50 bee colonies. On average, my family harvests 350 to 400 liters of honey each year. From the beginning of 2016 to the present, my family has harvested over 200 liters of honey." The main market for their honey is within the province and some other provinces and cities such as Bac Ninh , Hai Phong, and Hung Yen, bringing in an income of 40 million VND. Besides selling honey, the family also separates the colonies and sells the hives to people in need at a price of 600,000 to 800,000 VND per hive. Thanks to this, the family earns additional income and improves their living standards.
It is known that beekeeping in Tan Thanh commune began to develop strongly from 2015. According to statistics from the commune's People's Committee, the entire commune currently has 260 beekeeping households in 16 out of 27 villages with 1,320 bee colonies. On average, each bee colony yields 7 to 10 liters of honey per year at a price of about 200,000 VND/liter; bringing in nearly 2 billion VND in economic value. In 2021, the commune's forest flower honey product was evaluated and classified as a 3-star OCOP product.
According to beekeepers, to ensure healthy bee colonies and high honey yields, beekeepers must regularly monitor the condition of the colonies, clean the hives, proactively separate colonies at appropriate times, and choose locations near areas with abundant natural flowering plants. In addition, beekeepers always focus on caring for and protecting the bee colonies from adverse weather conditions, especially during periods of intense heat or prolonged rain.
Mr. Tran Van Tung, Chairman of the Tan Thanh Commune People's Committee, said: "Based on practical observations, beekeeping does not require a large area or high initial investment, but it requires beekeepers to be persistent and have a firm grasp of bee care techniques and behavior. Therefore, to support people in developing this model, the Commune People's Committee has coordinated with specialized agencies to organize training courses, transfer scientific and technical knowledge, and guide people in applying bee care methods; at the same time, strengthening propaganda and mobilization to encourage people to maintain and expand the model. In particular, the commune is currently guiding households to complete the dossiers and procedures to submit to the competent authorities for evaluation and reclassification of OCOP products for the commune's forest flower honey. In the future, the Commune People's Committee will continue to promote the application of safe production processes, focusing on improving product quality, improving packaging and labeling... to meet the increasingly high demands of the market." Strengthen trade promotion activities, advertise, and expand the market for local honey.
With favorable natural conditions, the support of the local government, and the proactive efforts of the people, beekeeping has become one of the suitable and effective production development directions in Tan Thanh commune. This has contributed to increasing income, improving people's lives, and promoting sustainable rural economic development.
