The Daily Mail reported that the plane carrying the Arsenal women's team caught fire at Braunschweig Wolfsburg airport in Germany. The cause is believed to be a bird strike to the engine just as the plane was preparing for takeoff. The accident resulted in a large explosion.
Flames immediately erupted from the left engine of the Boeing 737. The pilots on board quickly evacuated the passengers, including Arsenal's first team, to safety.

Arsenal later announced: "Our aircraft experienced a technical issue before takeoff in Germany. We had to stay overnight in Wolfsburg before flying back to England on Monday afternoon. We would like to thank the flight and ground staff at the airport for their assistance."
Arsenal's women's team drew 2-2 with Wolfsburg in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final. The second leg will take place on May 2nd ( Hanoi time). In the other semi-final, Barcelona beat Chelsea 1-0 away from home.
Aircraft accidents caused by birds striking engines are not uncommon. The infamous landing on the Hudson River in 2009 by pilot Chesley Sullenberger also occurred after the plane struck a flock of birds shortly after takeoff from La Guardia Airport in New York. This event was later made into the popular film *Sully*, starring Tom Hanks as Chesley Sullenberger.
