"Godmothers" provide support to disadvantaged children.

Over the years, the "Godmother" program launched by the Vietnam Women's Union has become a solid support system for orphaned children from disadvantaged backgrounds in Que Phuoc and Nong Son communes, helping them overcome difficulties and confidently pursue their studies.

Mai Thi Tuyet Ngan, a 7th-grade student at Nguyen Van Troi Primary and Secondary School (Que Phuoc commune), comes from a particularly difficult background as her mother abandoned her and her father does not have a stable job.

Thanks to the "Godmother" program, Tuyet Ngan was connected by the Women's Union of the commune with benefactors who provided her with 200,000 VND per month until her family's difficulties eased. This timely assistance boosted her confidence, enabling her to buy books, clothes, and focus on her studies.

"I'm very happy to receive the attention of the teachers and mothers. Thanks to that, I have more motivation to study better," Ngan shared.

In Nong Son commune, Huynh Thi Bich Hang, a 5th-grade student at Hoang Dieu Primary School, also faces a difficult situation, having lost her mother early and her father blind. Since receiving sponsorship in 2023, Hang has been supported with 6 million VND annually to cover tuition fees, school supplies, and necessities. She also regularly receives encouragement and guidance from the women's association members.

"I will try even harder, strive to study well so that I can have a stable career in the future, help my father, and not let down the mothers and aunts who have cared for me," Hang expressed.

According to Ms. Pham Thi Anh Tu, Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Que Phuoc commune, currently 10 out of 38 orphaned children in need are being sponsored through the joint efforts of officials, members, and benefactors. Beyond financial support, the union also organizes many practical accompanying activities such as: club activities, summer camps, teaching self-care skills and skills to prevent abuse; organizing children's festivals, Mid-Autumn Festival, and Children's Day celebrations…

"We hope that organizations and individuals both locally and outside the area will continue to support and help orphaned children receive nurturing not only materially but also spiritually, so that they can study, train, develop comprehensively, and become useful members of society," Ms. Tu said.

Meanwhile, Ms. Dang Thi Le, President of the Women's Union of Nong Son commune, shared that as soon as the two-tiered local government model was implemented, the union quickly launched the "Godmother" program and connected with 11 disadvantaged children to provide support of 2-6 million VND per child per year.

The main source of funding comes from contributions from officials and members, as well as donations from businesses and individuals. Beyond financial support, the association also implements many practical forms of assistance, such as donating uniforms, books, and school supplies.

In addition, the association assigns members to regularly be close to and support the children, both in their studies and in educating them on ethics and life skills. These activities have contributed to motivating the children to confidently go to school, nurture their dreams, and look towards a better future.

The "Godmother" program in Que Phuoc and Nong Son has spread widely throughout the community. Many officials, teachers, youth union members, organizations, and individuals are willing to sponsor and share love with orphaned children in difficult circumstances. Through this, not only are the children given more opportunities for education, but also a spirit of compassion and social cohesion is fostered.
