Simple tips to type faster on iPhone

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên15/02/2024

In January 2007, when Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the first iPhone with a completely touchscreen display and no physical keyboard, then-Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer scoffed at the design, deeming it unsuitable for business users due to the lack of a keyboard. Ultimately, both Steve Ballmer and the two former RIM CEOs, Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis, paid the ultimate price, losing their entire companies, simply because they shared a similar view of underestimating their competitor.

The virtual QWERTY keyboard has almost completely replaced physical keys in the modern smartphone world and is constantly being improved for optimal typing speed and accuracy. Returning to the iPhone's virtual keyboard, it has undergone very few changes over its long development, but it often contains interesting little tricks that help users type faster and easier.

The iPhone's virtual keyboard is equipped with many useful features that don't require additional apps.

On the social media platform Reddit, many users are sharing tips for typing numbers faster on the iPhone keyboard. Normally, to type numbers or special characters, users need to press the 123 key in the corner of the screen, and after finishing, press it again to switch back to the standard alphabetical keyboard.

Instead of performing the above actions, use one finger to hold down the 123 key, use the other finger to type the number/character you need, then release your finger. The keyboard interface will automatically revert to the QWERTY layout to continue the text. This method will save a considerable amount of time because it reduces the number of screen interactions.

To quickly type phrases with many characters or frequently used words, users will need the Text Replacement feature in Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement. Here, Apple provides several suggestions, which users can customize according to their habits or add new ones by tapping the "+" sign in the upper right corner.

Users can pre-set a number of quick characters to replace entire phrases, phone numbers, addresses... or anything that is usually typed. For example, @@ can be assigned to a personal email address so that each time this information is entered, instead of typing the full email, the user only needs to type @@ followed by a space, and the system will automatically replace the content. Or "sdt" can replace a 10-digit personal phone number...

If you need to quickly correct a typo in a text document but your touch input is inaccurate, you can press and hold the spacebar to move the cursor throughout the text. While doing so, do not remove your finger from the screen; simply gently scroll the cursor to the location where you want to delete the error.

For phones that still support 3D Touch, this operation is simpler as users can press and hold anywhere on the keyboard to control the cursor. However, from the iPhone Xr and later models, 3D Touch has been removed and replaced with Haptic Touch, so only the spacebar on the keyboard can be used. iPhone models that support 3D Touch include: 6s/6s Plus, 7/7 Plus, 8/8 Plus, X, Xs, and Xs Max.
