According to Marca , coach Scaloni decided to bench Messi in the match against Jordan in the final group J game of the 2026 World Cup . The reason stems from his desire to protect the Argentina captain from unnecessary injuries.
The 48-year-old strategist said he already has names of players who will start in this final group stage match, but would not reveal them.
"Those who get to play deserve to play; they are part of the team, and everything we have achieved is thanks to their efforts," coach Scaloni explained.
Leaving Messi on the bench was an understandable decision, and one that many experts had speculated about before the press conference. The reigning World Cup champions had already secured two consecutive victories against Algeria and Austria, guaranteeing their place in the round of 32.
Not only because Jordan is the weakest team in Group J and unlikely to spring a surprise against the South American representative, but also because coach Lionel Scaloni had no reason to risk fielding the team's brightest star.
However, Messi's absence from the starting lineup against Jordan left many fans feeling disappointed. This was especially true given the Argentina captain's excellent form, having recently surpassed legendary Miroslav Klose to become the greatest goalscorer in World Cup history with 18 goals.
Against a less-fancied opponent like Jordan, Messi is highly likely to continue scoring and further extend his goalscoring record at the biggest football tournament on the planet.
