YouTube is pursuing strategies that directly target the smart TV user community. |
Many YouTube TV users have recently noticed a controversial change. Instead of the previous short 15-30 second commercials, they are now facing continuous video ads lasting up to 90 seconds without a "Skip ad" button.
The Reddit user community was among the first to report this change. Many said they were surprised to see the waiting time to view the main content had become unusually long.
Notably, this format appears to be limited to the YouTube app on TVs, while mobile and computer users have not yet reported a similar phenomenon.

According to current official Google regulations, unskippable TV commercials are typically limited to 30 seconds. The appearance of 90-second clips indicates a significant shift in the company's marketing strategy.
In fact, in early 2024, YouTube also confirmed the rollout of unskippable 30-second ads to optimize revenue from large screens.
Analyzing this move, technology experts believe YouTube is trying to bridge the gap between online video platforms and traditional television. With long commercial breaks, the user experience is gradually becoming identical to watching cable TV channels in the past.
Besides revenue targets, this is seen as a leverage to promote paid services. By reducing the free viewing experience, Google hopes to increase the number of monthly paid subscribers.
"The introduction of these new 90-second ads shows that YouTube is increasing pressure to encourage hesitant users to subscribe to the Premium plan," Android Authority commented.
Currently, it remains unclear whether this is a technical glitch or a large-scale test by YouTube. Google has not yet provided an official response regarding whether they will change their advertising policies and update the maximum length for their media partners.
For average users, watching ads is an essential part of maintaining the free platform. However, if this 90-second format is officially implemented, it could spark a new wave of protests within the YouTube user community.
