In an effort to attract more users to subscribe to its paid plan, YouTube is strengthening measures to prevent unauthorized access to its Premium features. As a result, third-party browsers have been unable to play YouTube videos in the background since the beginning of this year.
This move by YouTube is not random, as a Google spokesperson confirmed to Android Authority that YouTube has now been updated to prevent users without a Premium subscription from accessing this feature.

YouTube is working to block tricks that use the Premium feature on free accounts.

However, one of the third-party browsers, specifically Microsoft Edge, seems to have found a way to circumvent the issue. According to leaker Leopeva64, Microsoft has restored the background YouTube video playback feature on the experimental Edge Canary mobile browser. In a social media post, Leopeva64 shared a video showing the YouTube browser continuing to play even when the user switches to other tabs or returns to the home screen.
Additionally, Microsoft has added audio indicators to tab cards, helping users identify which tab is playing the audio. This information can be viewed from the tab switcher, and users also have the option to mute or unmute a webpage's audio from the tab's context menu.
The feature of playing YouTube videos in the background first appeared on the Edge Canary browser late last year, and its return comes at a timely moment after YouTube recently increased the price of its Premium plan across all platforms.
