A devastating attack
Before the 2026 World Cup, there were times when the strength of the French national team's attack was questioned due to its inconsistent performance. Their biggest hope was Mbappe, who had just gone through a not-so-successful season at Real Madrid, and was also injured towards the end of the season. Mbappe failed to score in both friendly matches against Ivory Coast and Northern Ireland. More seriously, the ability of the Mbappe and Dembele duo to combine effectively was called into question.
But when they entered the official World Cup matches, everything seemed to transform. The four players in the attacking line not only took turns shining but also combined and coordinated perfectly with each other. Olise had 5 assists for his teammates to score, Mbappe, in addition to his top-scoring form with 3 braces in 4 matches, also perfected his game by dropping back to receive the ball and setting up Dembele to score a brace against Norway. Coach Deschamps adjusted the strategy by moving Olise to the center to play as an attacking midfielder (number 10) and moving Dembele to the right wing, which transformed the French attack from four separate, disjointed stars into an incredibly effective "atomic quartet".

Depending on the situation, this destructive quartet either forms triangular or quadrilateral formations, moving seamlessly and flexibly. It's similar to how Olise, Dembele, and Mbappe combined brilliantly to score the opening goal against Sweden in the knockout round. And sometimes, the audience gets to enjoy the spontaneous solo runs of individuals with exceptional speed and unpredictability. Most French forwards possess excellent one-on-one dribbling skills and top-class finishing. And in recent matches, we've seen pairings like Olise, who can pass accurately to Mbappe without even looking, or the Real Madrid forward, who has learned to drop back to receive the ball, draw in the opposing defense, and set up Dembele for a goal.
Olise is the special one.
In the victory against Sweden, Mbappe received the highest rating from Sofascore (9.8 points) thanks to his brace and impressive finishing ability. Olise was rated second with 8.8 points. However, in reality, Olise was the most important factor and the one who created the biggest impact in the French attack. Playing for Bayern Munich, Olise was primarily a right midfielder, and in the 2025-2026 season, he was considered the best right midfielder in Europe (slightly better than Yamal in terms of consistency and statistics: 22 goals, 26 assists, and the best passer in Europe).
Playing as an attacking midfielder isn't Olise's forte, but in all four matches so far, he's shown comprehensive development. He's been actively moving, covering an average of 8.4 km every 77 minutes; touching the ball around 72 times per game, completing 46 passes (87% accuracy); and providing 5 assists from nearly 10 decisive passes. In the match against Sweden, besides a near-spectacular overhead kick that hit the post, Olise also set an incredible record with a 92% pass accuracy rate in the opponent's third of the pitch. Olise can make difficult passes, risky through passes, and through balls with high accuracy. The incredibly difficult but perfectly placed through ball for Mbappe to score the third goal, making it 3-0, is clear evidence of Olise's perfect form.
The road ahead for the French national team is still fraught with challenges. But with what Olise, Mbappe, and their teammates have shown, France can certainly move forward with confidence. Possessing a devastating attack, France has truly become a force to be reckoned with for any opponent.
