On December 23rd, the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting announced that a strong cold air mass is moving southward and is expected to affect the North from the night of December 24th. The cold air mass, combined with a jet stream in the upper westerly wind zone, will cause showers, concentrated from the night of December 24th to the morning of December 25th.
Some tourist destinations such as Hanoi, Hai Phong, and Sa Pa (Lao Cai) experienced rain on Christmas Eve. Afterwards, as the cold air mass intensified, the rain gradually decreased, and mountainous and hilly areas may experience severe cold weather.
The US weather website Accuweather forecasts that the highest temperature in Hanoi will remain around 26 degrees Celsius until the end of December 24th, dropping to 15-19 degrees Celsius on December 25th. Areas above 1,500 meters, such as Sa Pa, may see temperatures as low as 7-11 degrees Celsius.
Central Vietnam was not yet affected by the cold air mass on Christmas Eve, so localities such as Vinh (Nghe An), Hue, Da Nang , and Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa) were cloudy with no rain, and nighttime temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius. From December 25th, when the cold air mass spreads, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Tri, Hue, and Da Nang will experience rain, with localized heavy rain.
Southern Vietnam may experience unseasonal rain on Christmas Eve. In Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, and Ca Mau, rain may occur in the afternoon and evening of December 24th but will end before 8 PM. On December 25th, the equatorial trough will become more active, and rain will spread across Southern Vietnam and the southern part of Lam Dong province.
