On the evening of June 4th, thunderstorms occurred over a wide area in Northern Vietnam, including Hanoi and many provinces in the midland and lowland regions. In Hanoi, many areas experienced heavy rain accompanied by strong gusts of wind during the night.
According to data from the Vrain rain gauge system, from 7 PM on June 4th to the morning of June 5th, many localities in Northern and North Central Vietnam experienced heavy rainfall. Among them, Thai Nguyen recorded the highest amount with 126.6mm at Trung Hoi station; Dien Bien 112.6mm at Muong Mun; Quang Ninh 105mm at Dong Trieu; Thanh Hoa 104.2mm at Muong Ngoai; Phu Tho 97.6mm at Nang Yen; Lao Cai 93.4mm at Tan Thinh; Hanoi 90.4mm at Kim Anh; and Bac Ninh 89.4mm at Bao Son.
Many other areas such as Tuyen Quang, Hai Phong , Hung Yen, Ninh Binh and Nghe An received rainfall ranging from 60-80mm.
Meanwhile, the central region from Quang Tri to Da Nang experienced low or almost no rainfall, generally below 10mm. The Central Highlands and Southern regions had scattered rain, mostly light to moderate. Specifically, Lam Dong received 38mm of rain, An Giang 24.4mm, and Ho Chi Minh City approximately 18.2mm.
Due to the influence of thunderstorms, the heatwave temporarily ended across Northern Vietnam on May 5-6. The highest temperature only reached 32-33 degrees Celsius. In the late afternoon and evening, scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely to continue in the Northwest region and the northern midland and mountainous areas.
Meteorological experts predict that from June 6th to 7th, hot weather will return to Northern Vietnam. Maximum temperatures will generally reach 35-36 degrees Celsius, with some areas reaching around 37 degrees Celsius. Interspersed with the hot days, there is still a possibility of localized thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening.
Current global meteorological forecast models predict that from around the afternoon of June 8th, a weak mass of cool air combined with a low-pressure trough and a westerly jet stream at high altitudes may cause widespread showers and thunderstorms in Northern Vietnam. The widespread heatwave will temporarily subside. Some areas may experience moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong gusts of wind due to the "clash" between opposing air masses.
While widespread rain is expected in the North, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in the South and Central Highlands on the evening of June 5-6. However, according to the National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting, rainfall will generally decrease significantly compared to previous days, typically around 10-30mm, with some areas exceeding 60mm.
