According to GameRant , the latest update to Minecraft Bedrock Edition has officially removed virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) support, ending a feature that once provided a unique immersive experience for players. This move was confirmed by Mojang in the release notes for version 1.21.80, ending all support for VR gameplay that was widely embraced across platforms such as SteamVR, Oculus Rift, and PlayStation VR.

The decision to remove VR support wasn't entirely unexpected, as Mojang had announced back in October 2024 that the end would occur in the spring of 2025. Although the removal was initially planned for March, players had a few more weeks to experience the feature before it was completely phased out. This marks the end of a lengthy development phase, during which Minecraft was once one of the most prominent open-world VR games, rivaling titles like No Man's Sky , The Forest , and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim .
Virtual reality features once allowed players to immerse themselves in Minecraft 's creative voxel world, with support from mods like Vivecraft , enabling play on many popular VR devices. However, Mojang discontinued PlayStation VR support last year and has now officially closed all development programs related to virtual reality in the game.
While the discontinuation of the virtual reality feature is disappointing for many players seeking a more immersive experience, the new update still brings some notable changes. Besides bug fixes and improvements to sound and object mechanics, version 1.21.80 also introduces the Flat World presets option – providing a perfectly flat surface for building, unaffected by uneven terrain as before.
Minecraft was first released in 2011 and by 2025 it had approximately 170 million monthly active players. The discontinuation of VR support suggests Mojang is adjusting its development priorities, focusing on core elements rather than continuing to maintain less popular features.
