Opportunities to escape poverty
Previously, the family of Mr. Ho Cu Day, in A May village, mainly grew cassava on their hillside fields. Due to outdated farming methods and the long-term depletion of soil fertility, the economic efficiency of their crops gradually decreased. As a result, poverty continued to plague the couple. Driven by a desire for change, Mr. Day researched suitable and effective production models to invest in and escape poverty. Recognizing that the local goat breed was easy to raise, had good resistance to disease, and required simple housing, he decided to invest in raising goats in enclosed pens. To ensure the model's effectiveness, he spent time visiting and learning from goat farming experiences both within and outside the commune.

With the support of preferential loans from the commune's Farmers' Association, nearly 10 years ago, Mr. Day raised 14 local breed goats. Thanks to his good grasp of breeding techniques, his family's goat herd grew rapidly, at times reaching 60 goats.
Raising goats in enclosed pens has been successful; after deducting expenses, his family earns 50-70 million VND per year. “Currently, the price of goat meat is quite high, and many traders come directly to our house to buy them, so we feel very secure. Along with farming, raising goats provides a fairly stable source of income, so my family's life is getting better and better. In the future, I will continue to invest in expanding the enclosed goat farming model to develop a sustainable family economy,” Mr. Day shared.
"Supporting" the expansion of the model
Not only have farmers proactively raised goats in enclosed pens, but many programs and projects have also supported dozens of breeding goats for disadvantaged families in Lia commune, contributing to the expansion of this model in the locality. For example, with the support of the Plan Project, in May 2025, A Xing Primary and Secondary School selected and provided 10 breeding goats to 5 families of students with particularly difficult circumstances and lacking the resources for production.
Raising goats in enclosures is very convenient because after school, students can help their parents cut grass near their homes to feed the animals. To date, the supported goats have developed well, some have reproduced, and parents and students are very happy to have been given the "tools" to escape poverty and develop their family's economy. Thanks to this, students feel secure attending school regularly and studying well," said Nguyen Mai Trong, Principal of A Xing Primary and Secondary School.
Thanks to their ease of raising and low risk, the native goat breed is chosen by many households in Lia commune. Currently, the entire commune has about 50 goat farming models using the enclosed pen method. On average, each model raises more than 10 goats, and after deducting expenses, brings in an income of 50-70 million VND/year. This is a significant source of income for ethnic minority people in this disadvantaged area.
Along with cultivating crops like cassava and bananas, raising native pigs, and raising goats, this has contributed to providing many farmers with a significant additional source of income. Besides Mr. Ho Cu Day's household, other exemplary households in Lia commune raising goats in enclosed pens include: Ho Van Thiep in A Quan village (raising over 55 goats, earning over 50 million VND per year), Ho Van De in A Sau village (raising over 50 goats, earning over 40 million VND per year)... This model not only contributes to job creation and improves the quality of life, but also changes the production mindset of people in the highlands.
Ms. Ho Thi Chuan, Chairwoman of the Farmers' Association of Lia Commune, said: “In recent times, many farmers have effectively utilized loan capital and support for crops and livestock from various programs and projects. In particular, people have successfully applied scientific and technical knowledge, leading to the implementation of many successful models, including the enclosed goat farming model. In the coming time, the association will continue to promote and encourage farmer members in the commune to learn and effectively exploit the potential and strengths of the locality to develop a suitable and efficient economy, contributing to environmental protection. At the same time, we will coordinate and support members in accessing preferential loan sources to expand and develop crop and livestock models in the area; and advise on opening training courses on livestock farming techniques to help members improve their knowledge and experience in production development, striving to sustainably alleviate poverty and achieve legitimate wealth.”
