Luka Modric once again made a special mark in his illustrious career by reaching the milestone of 200 appearances for the Croatian national team in the match against Panama at the 2026 World Cup on the morning of June 24th.
At 40 years old, the number 10 midfielder continues to be the greatest icon of Croatian football. His 200 appearances solidify his position as the player with the most caps for the national team in history. He is followed by Ivan Perisic with 137 appearances and Darijo Srna with 134.
Not only did Modric set a memorable milestone in terms of the number of matches played, but he also made another mark at the biggest football event on the planet. He is currently the third oldest non-goalkeeper player to have appeared in a World Cup. Only two names stand above the Croatian legend: Roger Milla, who played in the World Cup at 42 years and 39 days old, and Cristiano Ronaldo, who played at 41 years and 132 days old.
The 2026 World Cup also marks Modric's fifth appearance at the most prestigious tournament at the national team level. He has participated in the 2006, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026 World Cups, becoming one of the rare players to maintain top-level performance for two decades.
Modric's name is synonymous with the most successful period in Croatian football history. At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he led the team to the final and finished as runners-up after losing to France. Four years later in Qatar, Croatia continued to make a name for themselves by reaching the semi-finals, overcoming Brazil in the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Argentina.
Ahead of this year's tournament, Modric confirmed that the 2026 World Cup will be his final chapter in the national team's colors.
