The current market economy and international integration demands have placed traditional theatrical arts, including Hue's traditional opera, before significant challenges that need to be overcome. Besides the fierce competition from modern theatrical art forms, there is the harsh reality that artists can no longer make a living from their profession. Finding young talent is difficult, leading to a shortage of successors. All of this results in the worrying situation of a lack of audience.

Preserving traditional theatrical arts is crucial to safeguarding the "national soul" in the face of challenges and impacts from the market economy. In this sense, the goal of "one performance per year," along with the regular annual organization of national-level festivals such as the National Tuong and Folk Opera Festival, can be seen as a way for the State to support and facilitate art troupes, such as the Hue Opera and Drama Theatre, in preserving and promoting the value of traditional national theatrical arts.
Watching recent artistic performances, staged with the goal of "one performance per year," it's easy to see that behind the medals earned lies the highly creative, dedicated, and serious artistic work of collectives and individuals. The Hue opera, adapted from the poetic drama "Consort Diem Bich," by the Hue Opera and Drama Theatre, is proof of the meticulous investment in content and artistry, aiming to spread the cultural values of Hue.
However, it is worth noting that, after participating in festivals, like other forms of theatrical art, Hue's operas often have to be "stored away," without the opportunity to be performed for a wider audience. It's not surprising to learn that, for the Hue Opera and Drama Theatre, a professional stage with regular performances remains a dream.
And that's also why many veteran actors still have to play musical instruments for performances. Artist Van Nhuyen said that this is how Hue opera actors like him make a living and "keep the flame of the profession alive," when the theater only receives support to stage a few key excerpts to participate in annual art festivals aimed at preserving and safeguarding heritage.
