A subject that used to be at the back of the class, and the story of how it changed thanks to the 6C strategy.

TPO - On May 13th, speaking at the workshop summarizing the project "Developing Physical Education in Primary Schools in Vietnam," Professor Le Anh Vinh shared his concerns about people's perception of whether physical education is an important subject, because previously, physical education classes were always scheduled as the last period, after all other cultural classes.

Professor Le Anh Vinh, Director of the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences, shared a story: back when he was in high school, physical education classes were always scheduled for the 4th or 5th period, after Literature, Math, and other subjects. The sun was blazing, making it difficult to exercise during those times, so everyone said it was just a fad.

However, with the implementation of the 2018 General Education Program, changes have been observed in schools. Physical education teachers are highly appreciated by students because they have enjoyed fun and meaningful lessons, relieving the pressure of studying.

Schools and teachers truly have methods to solve the problem of how to make physical education lessons fun and healthy, and the subject of Physical Education also clearly demonstrates the changes in students' qualities and abilities in the new general education program.

Representatives from the Phu Tho Provincial Department of Education and Training stated that most students are enthusiastic about Physical Education classes because they get to exercise and relax after their academic lessons. However, in recent years, schools have faced a shortage of teachers, forcing them to assign staff to teach the subject in addition to their regular classes. Furthermore, inadequate facilities, such as training grounds and multi-purpose halls, have somewhat impacted the quality of teaching in this subject.

Mr. Nguyen Duy Ngoc, representative of the Ha Tinh Department of Education and Training, stated that the pilot project to develop physical education in primary schools has yielded positive results for both teachers and students. In August 2023, the Department sent key personnel from the subject to training on new teaching methods with six core elements (6C): self-confidence, contribution, engagement, choice, clarity, and recognition/praise.

Of those six factors, the one that students and teachers are most excited about is the "choice" factor, meaning that teachers will prioritize allowing students to choose and develop their skills and talents in those areas, rather than forcing them into a single activity.

"This is the core element of the program's success that other countries have implemented, tailored to each student. The teaching method is like a breath of fresh air for Physical Education, so students enjoy it and teachers are enthusiastic," Mr. Ngoc said.

The Department of Education and Training of Ha Tinh province has requested the Ministry of Education and Training to have programs and projects to support the provision of teaching equipment and tools for Physical Education in schools. For example, in the past, local schools received support in the form of balls and golf clubs for students to practice during and after school hours, which was very meaningful.

In 2020, the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences collaborated with other units to implement the project "Developing Physical Education in Primary Schools in Vietnam". Experts developed a set of materials with a new approach that has been successfully applied in many countries due to its flexibility and high connectivity, inspiring students and encouraging children to become more confident in training and honing their skills through physical education lessons.

This strategy helps teachers design dynamic, creative, and student-centered Physical Education lessons.

From 2020 to the present, more than 1,000 core primary school physical education teachers nationwide have received training, making the 6C strategy a primary method and form of teaching organization in the implementation of the physical education curriculum in all 63 provinces and cities.

To date, this strategy has been implemented by over 21,000 teachers, contributing to improving the quality of teaching and learning in Physical Education in accordance with the 2018 General Education Program.

Professor Dr. Le Anh Vinh assessed that the results achieved from the project are an important foundation for the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences to continue improving and developing a system of in-depth materials, contributing to supporting teachers in designing and implementing physical education lessons effectively, in line with the current direction of educational reform. Physical education lessons not only help students improve their physical fitness and motor skills, but also play an important role in forming a healthy lifestyle, discipline, and self-confidence for students.
