Professor Le Anh Vinh, Director of the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences, shared a story that in the past, when I was in high school, physical education classes were always scheduled in periods 4 and 5, after Literature, Math and other subjects. The sun was so bright that it was difficult to exercise during that time, so everyone said it was just a fad.
But when implementing the 2018 General Education Program, going to schools today has changed. Physical Education teachers are loved by students because they have fun, meaningful lessons, removing the pressure of having to study.
Schools and teachers really have methods to solve the problem of how to make physical education classes fun and healthy, and the subject of Physical Education also most clearly demonstrates the change in students' qualities and abilities in the new general education program.

A representative of the Department of Education and Training of Phu Tho province said that most students are interested in Physical Education classes because they can exercise and relax after cultural classes. However, in recent years, schools have lacked teachers and had to arrange for people to teach part-time. In addition, inadequate facilities, lack of playgrounds, multi-purpose halls, etc., have somewhat affected the quality of teaching in the subject.
Mr. Nguyen Duy Ngoc, representative of the Department of Education and Training of Ha Tinh, said that since the pilot project of developing Physical Education in primary schools has brought positive results from teachers and students. In August 2023, the Department sent key staff of the subject to training on new teaching methods with 6 core elements (6C) including: confidence, contribution, engagement, choice, clarity, recognition/praise.
Of those 6 factors, what students and teachers are most excited about is the "choice" factor, meaning that teachers will prioritize students' abilities and strengths so that they can choose to develop that educational content, instead of forcing them into one activity.
"This is the core factor of the success of the program that countries have implemented, suitable for each student. The teaching method is like a breath of fresh air for the subject of Physical Education, so students enjoy it and teachers are excited," said Mr. Ngoc.
The Department of Education and Training of Ha Tinh proposed that the Ministry of Education and Training have programs and projects to support teaching equipment in the Physical Education subject for schools. For example, recently, local schools have received meaningful support with balls and golf balls for students to practice during and after school hours.
In 2020, the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences coordinated with other units to implement the project "Developing Physical Education in Primary Schools in Vietnam". Experts have developed a set of documents with a new approach that has been successfully applied in many countries thanks to its flexibility and high connectivity, inspiring students and encouraging them to become more confident in practicing and improving skills through Physical Education lessons.
From that strategy, teachers can design dynamic, creative, student-centered Physical Education lessons.
From 2020 to present, more than 1,000 core teachers of Physical Education at primary level across the country have been trained, making the 6C strategy a main teaching method and form in implementing the Physical Education program at all 63 provinces and cities.
To date, this strategy has been applied by more than 21,000 teachers, contributing to improving the quality of teaching and learning of Physical Education in accordance with the 2018 General Education Program.
Prof. Dr. Le Anh Vinh assessed that the results achieved from the project are an important foundation for the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences to continue to improve and develop a system of specialized documents, contributing to supporting teachers in designing and implementing physical education lessons effectively, in line with the current educational innovation orientation. Physical education lessons not only help students improve their physical strength and motor skills, but also play an important role in forming a healthy lifestyle, discipline and confidence for students.
