Amorim could lead Milan against Manchester United. |
European media outlets have unanimously confirmed that Amorim is very close to taking over at AC Milan, being considered a strong candidate to replace coach Massimiliano Allegri. If the deal goes through, the 41-year-old coach will make a notable comeback just six months after being sacked by Manchester United.
Ironically, fate may bring Amorim face-to-face with his former club this summer. According to the pre-season friendly schedule, MU will play AC Milan in Poland on August 15th. This will be Amorim's first opportunity to reunite with many of his former players from the "Red Devils".
Beyond its professional significance, Amorim's new job could also help Manchester United ease their financial burden. Previously, the Old Trafford club reportedly had to pay around £16 million in compensation after terminating his contract. However, part of the compensation agreement included a clause to reduce the amount if Amorim found a new job within a certain period. Therefore, the amount Manchester United had to pay Amorim could be significantly reduced.
The Portuguese strategist left Old Trafford in January after a poor run of results. He had a win rate of only 38%, the lowest of any Manchester United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. In addition, a strained relationship with the club's hierarchy was also a reason for his dismissal.
What many fans regret is that Amorim never publicly said goodbye or thanked the fans after leaving Old Trafford, even though he still received considerable support during his most difficult times.
