Many candidates will score 8 in Literature.

This morning, June 10th, over 115,000 candidates completed the Literature exam for the 10th grade high school entrance exam organized by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training. According to the exam schedule, candidates started the exam at 8:00 AM and finished at 10:00 AM.

Many candidates felt happy after finishing the exam.

After completing the exam, many candidates emerged from the examination room in a cheerful mood, which they attributed to the exam being manageable and "easy to handle".

Doan Hai Phong (a student in class 9A18 at Giang Vo Secondary School, Ba Dinh District) said that this year's literature exam was quite easy compared to previous years. "The literary analysis section related to the short story 'The Distant Stars' was more difficult than the oral literary analysis section (which required students to express their feelings and emotions based on an excerpt from a father's letter to his child). However, this exam didn't have any strange, unusual, or overly challenging questions," Phong said, adding that he expects to score above 7.5.

According to Tran Duc Quan (a student from Nam Trung Yen Secondary School, Cau Giay District), although he didn't study too much literature because he already had a high chance of being admitted to a specialized high school affiliated with a university in Hanoi, he did quite well on the exam because the questions weren't too difficult. "I completed all the questions, I'm confident I got about 70-80%, and I expect to score between 7 and 8," Quan shared.

Familiar question structure

Ms. Nguyen Hang Nga, a teacher at Hoai Dac B High School, also commented that the literature exam for 10th grade in Hanoi this year was generally within the capabilities of the candidates.

The literary analysis section focuses on the work "Distant Stars ," a key piece in the 9th grade Vietnamese language and literature curriculum. This section includes very basic questions ranging from recognition and comprehension to application. The questions are all familiar to students reviewing the material, so those with a good level of understanding will be able to answer them all.

The essay writing requirements were also quite manageable. The essay consisted of 10-12 sentences, using transitional phrases and exclamation points. The social commentary section featured a good example about a father's feelings for his child. The requirement to write a 2/3-page argumentative essay on mastering one's own emotions was also very meaningful for young people about to enter high school. This was a high-level application section that effectively differentiated candidates.

"This year's exam was a good one, well-suited to the candidates' abilities. The questions have been consistent over the years and effectively differentiate between the candidates' skill levels," Ms. Nga commented.

According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hao, a teacher at Le Quy Don High School in Ha Dong, this year's exam has a familiar two-part structure. The exam has a good level of differentiation in knowledge; ensuring classification, with knowledge levels ranging from recognition to application and creativity. The differentiation is evident in question 2 of Part I and question 3 of Part II. The knowledge required in the exam is clear and not designed to trick students.

The literary essay question, requiring students to write a paragraph clarifying the camaraderie among the female youth volunteers, focuses on one of the four qualities that aligns well with the knowledge students learn in the curriculum. The social commentary question addresses mastering one's own emotions, using material outside of textbooks, which can inspire positive thinking in students, especially those in their adolescence.

It's rare for a candidate to get a perfect score of 10.

Regarding the score range, both Ms. Nga and Mr. Hao shared similar observations. Mr. Hao said: "A score of 6-7 is the most common range that candidates will achieve. Many students will score 8 or higher, up to 9. But scores of 9.5 to 10 will be difficult to reach. A perfect 10 is especially difficult, as it requires a relatively complete answer in terms of both presentation and knowledge content."

Ms. Nga also believes that many candidates will achieve a score of 7-8, and many will get a 9. However, getting a 10 is quite difficult, even unlikely for any candidate to achieve a perfect 10.
