Candidates register for the exam from January 24, 2026

The 2026 Ho Chi Minh City National University Competency Assessment Exam will take place in two rounds. The first round will take place on April 5, 2026 and the second round will take place on May 24, 2026.

There are 15 exam locations according to provincial-level administrative units after the merger, including: Ho Chi Minh City, Hue City, Da Nang, Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong, Dak Lak, Dong Nai, Tay Ninh, Dong Thap, Vinh Long, An Giang , Can Tho and Ca Mau.

In the first round of 2026, candidates will start registering for the exam from January 24 to February 23, 2026. The examination council will notify candidates of the exam registration form on February 28, 2026. The exam marking will take place from April 6 to April 15, 2026 and the results will be announced on April 17, 2026.

In the second round of exams, candidates register from April 18 to April 25, 2026. The examination council will notify candidates of their exam registration forms on May 16, 2026. The exam marking will take place from May 25 to June 5, 2026, and the results will be announced on June 6, 2026.

The 2025 Competency Assessment Exam of Ho Chi Minh City National University attracted more than 152,000 candidates, over 223,000 registrations at 55 testing sites in 25 provinces/cities across the country. In 2025, this exam will be used by 111 higher education institutions for admission. In the Ho Chi Minh City National University system alone, about 14,500 candidates were admitted by this method (accounting for 56.32% of the target) - the highest rate since 2018.

Characteristics of the competency assessment test

Sharing at the conference on December 5, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh, Director of the Center for Testing and Assessment of Training Quality (Ho Chi Minh City National University), said that the orientation of the 2026 competency assessment exam will continue to maintain the principles and goals, develop stably and sustainably the exam in the form of objective multiple-choice tests on paper and the exam structure will remain stable as in 2025.

Accordingly, the test consists of 3 parts: language use 60 questions; mathematics 30 questions; scientific thinking 30 questions (logic, data analysis 12 questions and scientific reasoning 18 questions). The test questions are designed to suit the reality of the high school graduation exam; based on the output standards of the 2018 General Education Program, especially the scientific thinking section.

Highlighting the characteristics of the competency assessment test from 2025, Dr. Chinh emphasized that increasing the number of questions in the Vietnamese, English, and math sections will help increase reliability and distinction. Adjusting the format and way of asking questions in the scientific thinking section, with the goal of assessing candidates' ability in logic and scientific reasoning to solve real-life situations in the fields of science, technology, economics, and society.

"The orientation of the competency assessment exam is to assess basic competencies for university study. The questions are related to practical, multi-disciplinary contexts and are provided with necessary data and formulas. The structure and content have many similarities with international standardized tests such as: SAT (USA), PET (Israel), GAT (Thailand)", said Dr. Chinh.

Ho Chi Minh City National University will soon announce sample questions for the 2026 capacity assessment exam.
