Hope to be approved so that the teaching profession is less "unsteady"

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên29/05/2023

We want good teachers and excellent students, but teachers' salaries are...

Mr. Nguyen Kim Son stated that the Ministry of Education and Training has repeatedly worked with the Ministry of Interior , and the two ministries have agreed to submit a proposal to the Government to increase preferential allowances for preschool and primary school teachers. Specifically, the preferential allowance for preschool teachers will be increased by 10% and for primary school teachers by 5%.

"The Prime Minister has also instructed the Ministry of Finance to provide its opinion before taking further steps. On May 12th, I sent an official document to the Ministry of Finance and hope that this matter will be handled soon…," Minister Son informed.

The Ministry of Education and Training and the Ministry of Interior have proposed increasing preferential allowances for preschool teachers by 10% and for primary school teachers by 5%.

Many readers have expressed particular interest in this information, with many supportive comments but also quite a few suggestions and counterarguments.

A commenter named Truc Hon Viet sent in and received much agreement from other commenters, stating: "I have a low level of education, only 12th grade, but I think the education sector doesn't know how to use troops. You only want your soldiers to fight well, be excellent in battle, and bring home many victories… but have you nurtured your soldiers? Have you learned how to train them?"

We hope for good teachers and excellent students, but have teachers' current salaries even compared to factory workers? Have they even compared to market vendors? And they're far behind many other professions. Many people simply think that teachers only teach 4-5 hours a day, and a salary of 4-6 million VND is much higher than a factory worker who works 8 hours and earns 6-7 million VND. So, who calculates their salary for the time they spend at home preparing lesson plans and getting ready for class…?

No matter the profession, a stable income is essential for a good life and a positive work ethic. With such a meager income, countless worries pile up, leaving no room for focused work... Teachers spend four years in university, sacrificing countless hours and their youth, and yet the salary they receive barely covers their investment."

According to Truc Hon Viet, "The education sector should ideally have the most stable income because it is the most important and leading sector… but teachers' salaries are not even equal to what students earn working as tutors for 1-2 hours a day. In the city, teachers can easily earn extra income by opening tutoring classes, but in rural areas, that is impossible"…

Although the comment received many "likes," it also received counterarguments from a user named Chu who pointed out the reality: "Education leaders do not have the right to decide teachers' salaries. Teachers' salaries must be considered within the overall salary structure of the administrative apparatus; they cannot demand high salaries alone while other sectors have low salaries."

Spending more time at school than at home, low salary, precarious life.

Many readers also expressed their confusion as to why the Ministry of Education and Training and the Ministry of Interior only agreed to increase preferential allowances for preschool and primary school teachers, but not for teachers at other levels or school staff.

BĐ Phong Nguyen wrote: "It's difficult to find someone to speak up for employee salaries. Looking at the salary scale is disheartening. Although not as high as teachers' salaries, the difference shouldn't be so huge. Employees don't even have time for extra work because they've already worked full-time during the week."

Mr. Phan also stated that the current situation is truly unfair to administrative staff because they do not have a summer vacation, their salaries are low, they have to work too many additional duties, and they have to work all day.

However, the majority of opinions agree that, given limited financial resources, prioritizing increased preferential allowances for preschool teachers is entirely justified and appropriate given the unique nature of this educational level.

Responding to the opinion that teachers, regardless of their educational level or profession, face hardships and need attention, commenter Quyen Pham Le wrote: "Just one day of teaching preschool and you'll know whether it's tiring or not. I've taught for 20 years and my salary is only about 7 million VND. If I didn't love the profession, would I continue doing this job? If salaries continue like this, when our generation retires, there will certainly be no younger generation to replace us in caring for, nurturing, and educating preschool children."

Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Nguyet also shared: "I am a preschool teacher, my working hours are from 6:45 to 17:30, almost 12 hours a day. Many colleagues have left the profession. Sometimes we talk about working only out of passion, because the salary isn't enough to live on; my husband supports me. After nearly 15 years of work, my salary is only 6 million VND, not including various other expenses. I've never brought home 6 million VND a month..."

Commented by parent Trong Lich Nguyen: "On the first day of kindergarten, as soon as we left, the whole classroom was filled with crying. Each class had two teachers in charge of over twenty children, and the teachers and children struggled with each other. It was exhausting, incredibly exhausting, because the children were so 'spontaneous'... the teachers had to clean up everything. They didn't even get a break at lunchtime. And then there was the drawing, decorating, and all that... who could possibly endure that? I hope the government will soon consider and provide appropriate compensation for kindergarten and primary school teachers. They truly sacrifice so much."

Some voters have expressed concern that while the Ministry of Education and Training and the Ministry of Interior have agreed on the proposal, the Ministry of Finance and other ministries have not yet given their consent, raising questions about whether the preferential policy will actually materialize. Therefore, more voices supporting this proposal are needed.

Representative Ngoc Nu Danh Thi expressed: "Hopefully, the National Assembly representatives understand the hardships and difficulties faced by teachers, especially those in preschool education. They spend more time at school than at home, but their salaries are too low, leaving them in a precarious situation."
