A dolphin was about to be butchered. People in a commune in Quang Binh contributed money to buy it and release it into the sea

Talking to reporters, Mr. Dong Vinh Quang - Chairman of the People's Committee of Canh Duong commune (Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province) said: "Some fishermen on Bo boats (boats under 6m) in your commune caught dolphins. Then we landed at Canh Duong commune to cut the meat. Seeing that, many boat owners and fishermen in the commune mobilized and contributed money to buy back the fish to release them back into the sea."

Specifically, around 9:22 a.m. on March 3, fishermen in Xuan Hoa coastal village, Quang Xuan commune (Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province) went to sea to catch a dolphin about 2m long, weighing about 40kg, then landed at Roon estuary. Canh Duong commune (Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province) to cut meat for sale.

When seeing dolphins, many boat owners and fishermen in this commune mobilized fishermen to buy back and release the fish back into the natural environment.

According to the belief of fishermen in the seaside village of Canh Duong commune, if dolphins appear in any sea area, they will have good luck all year long. Fishermen will hold a ceremony to pray for peace and find ways to bring the dolphins out to sea.

In particular, the whole village is not allowed to eat or trade dolphins. If the dolphin washes ashore and is no longer alive, the fishermen take it to the fish cemetery for a burial ceremony.

“The last time dolphins appeared in Canh Duong beach village was nearly 10 years ago. Fortunately, right after the 380th anniversary of the village and the New Year 2024 fishing ceremony, Canh Duong fishermen and neighboring communes won a lot of fish and anchovies, bringing quite a high income to the people. fishermen right from the first sea trips of the year," said Mr. Dong Vinh Quang - Chairman of Canh Duong Commune People's Committee.
