The Chu Market area (Chu Market town, Dinh Hoa district) is a small valley nestled at the foot of a towering mountain range, surrounded by two streams.

According to local legends, in 1870, Luong Tam Ky – a deputy general in the " Taiping Heavenly Kingdom" peasant uprising of China – after leading his remaining troops across the border into Vietnam, commanded his army to attack and occupy Dinh Hoa, establishing it as his stronghold. Upon arriving in Định Hóa, the Chinese in this army noticed the favorable terrain of the valley at the foot of the limestone mountain range and chose it as their settlement. Not long after, many Kinh people from the lowlands, fleeing the French, also migrated here. Seeing the potential for trade, they gathered and formed a small market. Naturally, they then established themselves here as a place to settle and make a living. That small market became known as Chu Market, or colloquially as the "wandering market."

Chu Market witnessed the simultaneous oppression and exploitation by the French colonialists and the remnants of the peasant uprising in China (led by Luong Tam Ky). It also witnessed the heroic struggle of our army and people to liberate ourselves from foreign domination and seize power. Although Chu Market has undergone many changes today, on market days, crowds of people from all over the villages flock to the market under the shade of the old banyan tree…

The banyan tree at Chu Market was once the site of a rally attended by thousands of local people aiming to overthrow the rule of the French colonialists and their puppet feudal government.
The three kiosks, built during the French colonial era, have now been upgraded and are in good condition.
Today, Chu Market offers thousands of items, meeting most of the needs of the people in the mountainous district of Định Hóa.
Each month, Chu Market is held six times on the 3rd, 13th, 23rd, 8th, 18th, and 28th of the Gregorian calendar.
The Dao ethnic people have been selling traditional medicine at Chu Market for decades.
Selling fabric is one of the oldest professions that still survives today.
Going to Chu Market on market day to buy traditional cakes has become a habit for many people in Dinh Hoa.
