On July 17, the Assistant Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for Political Affairs, Lana Nusseibeh, called for the deployment of a “temporary” international mission to respond to the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

Ms. Nusseibeh emphasized that as the international community carefully considers the post-conflict future of Gaza, "the goal cannot be a return to the status quo prior to October 7, 2023."
In an op-ed published in the Financial Times , a UAE diplomat emphasized that any "future" efforts must fundamentally alter the trajectory of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict toward the goal of establishing a Palestinian state coexisting peacefully alongside the State of Israel.
Affirming support for lasting and just peace, the UAE Assistant Foreign Minister called for the implementation of a common strategy to break the cycle of violence in Gaza and build a foundation for a new future for both Israel and Palestine.
Accordingly, the first step will be to deploy an interim international mission to address four priorities: responding to the humanitarian crisis, establishing law and order, laying the groundwork for government, and paving the way for the unification of the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank under the administration of a single legitimate Palestinian authority.
According to Nusseibeh, this mission with its four priorities could be a central part of a broader strategy to help the Palestinian people achieve their aspirations for a negotiated state.
However, clarifying that a temporary international mission in Gaza can only be established upon a formal invitation from the Palestinian Authority headed by a new, credible, and independent prime minister, the UAE diplomat stressed that Israel must also contribute to these recovery efforts.
Ms. Nusseibeh also stated that the restoration of the Gaza Strip is impossible under the current blockade, and that such a mission would require the full and unwavering support of all parties involved.
Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 2023 have claimed the lives of more than 38,000 people in Gaza, mostly women and children. The Israeli military campaign has reduced much of the 2.3 million-population area to rubble, leaving most civilians homeless and famine worsening.
