MU has lost patience with Ugarte. |
Ugarte was signed by MU from PSG in 2024 for an initial fee of £42.3 million, which could rise to £50.75 million depending on add-ons. However, after two disappointing seasons, the 25-year-old only made 10 starts last season and is no longer part of the long-term plans of the Old Trafford club.
According to the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Regulation (PSR), Manchester United needs to generate around £25.38 million to avoid recording a loss on the books. However, the club's management is reportedly willing to sell for less than this amount if they receive a suitable offer.
Manchester United are confident they have sufficient financial resources to accept losses thanks to the significant profits generated from recent deals. Notably, the sale of Alejandro Garnacho for £40 million last summer is a prime example. As a product of the club's youth academy, Garnacho's entire transfer fee was considered a net profit according to PSR (Manchester Society for the Reserves of Manchester).
In addition, MU also earned money from other young player transfers and received £5 million from the resale clause when Alvaro Carreras moved to Real Madrid. The departures of Casemiro, Jadon Sancho, and Tyrell Malacia also saved the club over £600,000 per week in wages. If Marcus Rashford leaves the team this summer, the wage bill will decrease by a further £325,000 per week.
The biggest obstacle to the Ugarte deal currently lies in his salary of around £120,000 per week. Although Manchester United want to sell the player, they are not actively offering him for sale publicly to avoid lowering his transfer value. Therefore, the possibility of Ugarte remaining at Old Trafford after the summer transfer window is entirely plausible.
If they successfully part ways with Ugarte, MU will continue to add another midfielder. After reaching an agreement to sign Ederson from Atalanta, the team is also closely monitoring Mateus Fernandes.
