Casemiro could leave MU as part of a midfield overhaul. |
According to ESPN , the £1 million per week savings will be reinvested by the "Red Devils" in young, energetic midfielders who can bring long-term value to Ruben Amorim's team. A number of high-paying contracts are about to expire, including those of Casemiro, Harry Maguire, and Jadon Sancho, along with the belief that Marcus Rashford will be permanently signed by Barcelona, opening up an opportunity for a major restructuring of MU.
Manchester United reportedly inquired about signing Carlos Baleba in August, but Brighton demanded a staggering £115 million. The Old Trafford club also maintained interest in young duo Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace) and Angelo Stiller (Stuttgart). However, despite relying heavily on Casemiro, United have no intention of signing a midfielder in January, as they only want to spend on top targets in the summer.
This past summer, MU failed to sign any midfielders due to budget constraints and also rejected an offer for Romeo Lavia in the deal to sell Alejandro Garnacho to Chelsea. The absence of the Champions League resulted in a loss of at least £40 million for MU, while the staff reductions implemented by the Ineos group helped bring the wage bill back to its lowest level since the 2017/18 season.

Sancho is likely to leave MU as a free agent when his contract expires. |
Sancho's contract (£300,000/week) will expire at the end of the season, officially closing a failed transfer deal as MU has no plans to keep him. Rashford is likely to leave the club after shining at Barcelona. Meanwhile, Casemiro and Maguire have had to accept reduced salaries, to £350,000 and £200,000/week respectively.
If Maguire and Casemiro refuse a pay cut, they will be forced to leave Old Trafford because the Red Devils' management is determined to tighten the wage bill. If both experienced key players agree to a pay cut, MU could save around £1 million per week.
That amount would be enough for MU to pay the salaries of two new midfielders. Baleba and Wharton could cost up to £180 million, while Stiller is valued at around £50 million.
Regardless, MU will be ending the era of recruiting aging stars with huge salaries. From now on, they will embark on a long-term strategy with smart spending, recruiting according to their needs, and building a sustainable, youthful core for the Amorim era.
