According to The Athletic , it is entirely possible that Fletcher will continue in his role as interim manager of the "Red Devils" for the Manchester derby on January 17th.
Currently, MU is conducting interviews to select a successor for Ruben Amorim, but this process is not expected to be completed anytime soon. If things take longer than expected, Fletcher will continue to lead the team not only in the FA Cup match against Brighton on January 11th, but also in the crucial Premier League clash against Man City a week later.
According to sources close to the matter, the two leading candidates for the manager's job at Old Trafford right now are Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Carrick, the former midfielder, had a brief stint as interim manager of Manchester United. He had a direct meeting with CEO Omar Berrada and Director of Football Jason Wilcox.
Meanwhile, Solskjaer, who helped MU finish as runners-up in the Premier League in the 2020/21 season, is expected to participate in an interview today (January 10).
Nevertheless, the MU leadership remains cautious, wanting to carefully consider all options to avoid repeating hasty decisions in the past. This caution makes keeping Fletcher as interim manager for a while longer a safe solution.
For Fletcher, this is a big challenge but also an opportunity for the former Scottish midfielder to prove his managerial abilities.
