MU has decided to extend Heaton's contract. |
Manchester United are preparing for a major squad overhaul ahead of the 2025/26 season. However, veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton is likely to remain at Old Trafford for at least another season.
At 39 years old, and with only three appearances for the first team since returning to MU in 2021, Heaton seemed poised to leave at the end of this season. However, according to the Daily Mail , the Red Devils' management is in negotiations to keep him as their third-choice goalkeeper.
Heaton hasn't featured in any official first-team matches this season. His only appearance was with the U21 team in a 3-2 win against Barnsley. Nevertheless, Manchester United's decision to retain him is strategically significant.
The future of both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir is in question. Onana has consistently made mistakes since joining from Inter Milan, while Bayindir also disappointed in his rare start against Newcastle. Clearly, the Manchester United coaching staff are concerned about the depth of their goalkeeping options.
In that context, keeping an experienced goalkeeper like Heaton, who understands the Old Trafford environment and accepts a backup role, is a logical choice. Heaton will be a reliable custodian both on and off the pitch.
Heaton came through the Manchester United youth academy. He joined the first team in 2005 but was unable to find a place at Old Trafford. After leaving MU and playing for seven different clubs, Heaton returned to play for the "Red Devils" in 2021.
At Euro 2004, Heaton was also called up to the England squad, playing an important role in training, supporting Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Dean Henderson.
