Manchester United's squad lacks depth. |
Manchester United entered the match as a team dreaming of the Champions League, but left the pitch feeling like a squad lacking the depth to sustain their ambitions. This defeat wasn't simply a matter of form; it was the result of long-standing gaps that were just waiting for the right moment to surface.
When the system depends on the individual
The absence of midfielder Kobbie Mainoo and center-back Harry Maguire created a clear domino effect. One controls the tempo, the other maintains order in the defense. When both are absent, MU loses its most important backbone. What happened on the pitch was not surprising, but an inevitable result.
Manchester United's midfield became disjointed. Manuel Ugarte was given a chance but showed a lack of rhythm. His passes were inaccurate, his reading of the game was slow, and most importantly, he couldn't connect with Casemiro. When the midfield loses control, all tactical systems above and below collapse.
In defense, Lisandro Martinez returned from injury but didn't have enough time to regain his match fitness. Without Maguire, MU lacked solidity in aerial duels and intense challenges. Leny Yoro was put in a difficult position against the physical strength of the opponents, resulting in two goals conceded from crosses – a familiar scenario that remained uncorrected.
Manchester United's problem isn't just one defeat. It's about how the team relies too heavily on a few individuals. Mainoo isn't the biggest star, but he's the most crucial link in the team's operation. When he's absent, no one can replace him.

Without Maguire, MU loses a key player in defense. |
The same applies to Maguire. Although not always highly rated, he provides a stability that other options haven't been able to replicate. Modern football demands depth, but MU is currently operating on a model where "a missing player makes things worse."
Ugarte is a clear example. An expensive signing, but he never lived up to expectations. The match against Leeds further highlighted the gap between his transfer value and his actual contribution. When given the opportunity, he failed to take advantage of it and prove himself worthy.
Casemiro is also no longer at his peak. Without a reliable partner alongside him, his limitations are further magnified. MU not only lacks players, but also lacks the right combination.
Squad depth and the summer transfer challenge.
Looking at the bench, the problem becomes even clearer. The alternatives aren't enough to make a difference. When a game-changing moment is needed, the manager doesn't have players capable of turning the tide. This is a fatal weakness for a team aiming to compete on multiple fronts.
Bruno Fernandes remains a cornerstone. He moves constantly, drives the tempo, and keeps the team's spirit high. But a great team cannot rely on a leader who is past his prime. Bruno's resilience is admirable, but it's not a long-term solution.

MU is struggling because of a depleted squad. |
Casemiro's impending departure has made the midfield problem even more urgent. Manchester United have clearly identified their goal of strengthening this area, with names like Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, and Sandro Tonali in mind. But signing players is only the first step. More importantly, they need to build a stable system where any individual can integrate and thrive.
Leeds didn't do anything extraordinary. They simply played with high energy, applied constant pressure, and exploited their opponents' weaknesses. This makes Manchester United's defeat even more worrying. When a team is defeated in such a straightforward manner, the problem no longer lies with the opponent, but with themselves.
The goal of returning to the Champions League is still within reach. But this defeat is a clear warning: without improving the depth and quality of the squad, MU will only be able to "return," not "compete."
A busy summer is inevitable. But more importantly, it has to be a summer in the right direction. Otherwise, failures like the one against Leeds will repeat themselves, only with different opponents and at different times.
