"Sales hunting" - a new consumer habit.
While many families have turned off their lights and gone to bed, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Huong, residing in Dong Gia Nghia ward, begins her usual routine: opening her phone and browsing e-commerce platforms to hunt for discounted items.
From household appliances and clothing to small household items, most of her shopping needs have gradually shifted online. Ms. Huong shared that buying online saves her the trouble of traveling, reduces fuel costs, and offers more choices. Sometimes, she can't find the items she likes in stores compared to what she sees online.
Beyond convenience, online shopping also allows Ms. Huong to proactively compare prices. Before making a purchase, she usually spends time comparing prices across different platforms and the market to choose the most reasonable option.
However, along with the convenience come a number of worries. Ms. Huong frankly stated that there are many scams now, from low-quality goods to fake delivery drivers. When buying online, you have to be vigilant and choose reputable sellers.
Sharing the same view, Ms. Ta Nhu Quynh from D'ran commune said that shopping in the digital space offers many conveniences, but one must always consider carefully. Before each decision, she researches product information, compares prices across platforms, and reads user reviews to minimize risks.
She prioritizes large platforms with transparent rating systems and buyer protection policies. When making payments, she avoids entering sensitive information and prefers paying upon delivery. She also uses apps to manage her spending and set monthly budget limits.
Ms. Quynh confided that it only takes a few clicks to buy an item. If not properly controlled, it's very easy to spend impulsively.
With just a few taps on their phone screens, people's consumption habits are changing every day. Shopping has become easier, but this very ease has also blurred the line between rational consumption and impulsive spending.
Digital infrastructure drives modern consumption.
According to the province's digital transformation report, approximately 50% of the adult population has participated in online shopping through e-commerce platforms, social networks, and sales websites; e-commerce revenue is estimated to account for over 10% of total retail sales of goods and consumer services.
Furthermore, over 50% of communes and wards have a presence on online transaction platforms, demonstrating the increasingly widespread adoption of this form of shopping. These figures show that online shopping is no longer a trend, but has become an integral part of modern consumer life.
This development is strongly driven by increasingly sophisticated digital infrastructure. The percentage of people using smartphones has reached nearly 88%, internet coverage is widespread with over 115% of the population subscribed, and 99% of households use fiber optic internet. This is a crucial foundation that allows people easy access to online shopping platforms, thereby forming new consumer habits – faster, more convenient, and with a wider variety of choices.
In addition, during the period 2021-2025, over 2,000 businesses, households, and individuals received training in e-commerce skills. Many local products were listed on platforms such as Shopee, Lazada, and Tiki, contributing to expanding the consumer market.
According to the plan for 2030, Lam Dong aims to increase the percentage of adults participating in online shopping to approximately 75%, with e-commerce revenue accounting for about 20% of total retail sales; 80% of transactions being cashless and 100% of transactions having electronic invoices. At the same time, e-commerce will develop sustainably, linked to traceability, and promoting OCOP products and key agricultural products on digital platforms.
From changes within individual families to broader societal trends, online shopping is gradually shaping a new way of consuming, where people not only need to "buy quickly" but also "buy smartly" in an increasingly developed digital environment.
