Major anniversaries become a "lever" attracting tourists to Hanoi, even during off-peak seasons.

The boost from major holidays

Despite having nearly a month left until Hanoi's 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2nd, the capital is experiencing a surge in visitors, pushing the Northern Vietnam tour market into its busiest season of the year. Reporters from the Vietnam Law Newspaper have observed that most hotels in prime locations in central Hanoi are fully booked on reputable travel platforms like Agoda and Booking.com. It is understood that a large number of tourists planned their trips as early as June to secure hotel rooms near the event venues. Areas around Ba Dinh Square, the Old Quarter, and Hoan Kiem Lake have seen rooms fully booked since very early on, demonstrating the exceptional appeal of this year's grand celebration.

Not only are hotel rooms fully booked, but airfares to Hanoi are also tending to increase two to three times compared to normal days. Surveys on booking platforms like Bestprice and Traveloka show that airfares to Hanoi from the end of August to the beginning of September have surged.

Thanks to the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2nd, "satellite" destinations such as Ninh Binh , Ha Long, Sa Pa, and Moc Chau are also being chosen by tourists as part of their itineraries. Tourists can both visit the beautiful scenery of Northern Vietnam and return to Hanoi to attend the celebrations and enjoy the autumn weather.

In fact, figures from July showed strong growth in tourism in the capital city in the months leading up to the country's major anniversary. In July, Hanoi welcomed approximately 2.8 million tourists, a 10.3% increase compared to the same period last year. Of these, international visitors accounted for over 553,000, a 25.2% increase compared to the same period last year. Many tourists shared that they came to Hanoi to visit historical sites and take perfect photos for the upcoming anniversary.

Promising a "boom" in the second half of the year.

By 2025, Hanoi aims to welcome 31 million tourists, including 7.5 million international visitors, with total tourism revenue projected to reach approximately 130 trillion VND.

With two major anniversaries – the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2nd, and the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025) – Hanoi has become a cultural and historical center attracting domestic and international tourists. Therefore, even though summer is typically the low season for tourism in Hanoi, the number of visitors remains stable and tends to increase as the holidays approach. According to a report from the Hanoi Department of Tourism, during the April 30th - May 1st holiday period alone, the city is estimated to welcome over 875,000 visitors, an increase of over 18.6% compared to the same period in 2024 (in 2024, Hanoi welcomed approximately 737,000 visitors). This includes over 136,000 international tourists, an increase of 55.35%.

On the occasion of the September 2nd National Day, the number of tourists visiting Hanoi is expected to increase many times compared to previous years. This serves as a "catalyst" for Hanoi to prepare for the upcoming autumn-winter peak tourist season. According to statistics from the Agoda platform, in the past few months, Hanoi has led the trend in searching for destinations for National Day, with the number of accommodation searches increasing more than 44 times compared to last year. PYS Travel, headquartered in Hanoi, recorded a 130% increase in bookings to visit the capital during this holiday compared to the same period last year.

In the near future, the Hanoi Department of Tourism, along with other units, is preparing new product lines, especially those focusing on craft village tourism along the South Thang Long heritage tourism route. Simultaneously, other inner-city tourism products, particularly inner-city rail tourism routes, will also be launched. Examples include experiential tourism products linked to heritage values and historical sites in O Dien commune; the "South Thang Long Heritage Route" tourism route; community-based tourism models in My Duc commune; and rural agricultural tourism in Tich Loc commune…

In addition, Hanoitourist Corporation also develops a range of products including night tours, city tours, bicycle tours, cultural tours, and culinary tours to meet the diverse sightseeing and experiential needs of tourists.

To enhance the experience for foreign visitors during the upcoming September 2nd celebration and in the future, Hanoi is strengthening the development of self-booking tours, integrated digital maps, and multilingual artificial intelligence (AI) applications.
