At a recent meeting between the leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and various departments, agencies, and a well-known enterprise in the field of producing environmentally friendly "green" vehicles, several specific actions planned for the near future were announced. These include the city's collaboration on the "Green Transformation - Expanded Ho Chi Minh City" project; and action programs and plans such as "For a Green Can Gio," "For a Green Con Dao ," and "Electric Vehicle Sharing" (car/bike sharing) in Can Gio and Con Dao.
The city is also developing a plan to control vehicle emissions. Currently, the Department of Construction is carefully reviewing and evaluating the impact of policies, solutions, and implementation conditions. The Department of Agriculture and Environment is coordinating the preparation of a report proposing adjustments to the investment plan to enhance environmental monitoring capacity in the city.
During the meeting, the idea of implementing an internationally standardized electric school bus system was also presented. According to this plan, the school bus system would monitor the routes and boarding/alighting information of students. Parents could check the route information, knowing where their children are going and where they are coming from without having to leave work to pick them up after school.
In particular, regarding the program to convert all two-wheeled delivery and ride-hailing drivers in Ho Chi Minh City to electric vehicles, relevant units have conducted field surveys to identify implementation needs and locations for rest areas combined with charging stations for drivers. By June 2025, the overall plan to convert 400,000 motorbikes to electric vehicles will be finalized, and a consultation meeting with experts will be organized. A workshop to announce the program and implementation roadmap will be held in July 2025. At the meeting, the leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee emphasized their special attention to green transformation programs and projects: “The city leaders have identified green transformation as a field that creates great value and serves the orientation of sustainable development.”
Although there are still differing opinions regarding the issue of green transformation, the reality of recent years shows that "greening" is not only a global and Vietnamese trend, but also suitable for the practices of large cities in Vietnam, and aligns with the needs of many consumers...
Not only are citizens interested in how workers in the ride-hailing sector will be supported in transitioning from gasoline to electric vehicles, but many localities are also hoping that the model being planned and implemented by Ho Chi Minh City will bring great effectiveness so that other provinces and cities can learn from and apply it.
