Reversible hair loss occurs when hair falls out due to a change in the cycle but the hair follicle remains intact. Irreversible hair loss, on the other hand, occurs when the hair follicle is destroyed and scarred over, according to the health website Verywell Health (USA).

Red meat, which is rich in iron, may promote hair growth in people who are deficient in it.

According to experts, for cases of reversible hair loss, people need to supplement their diet with the following nutrients:

Protein

Hair is primarily made up of keratin protein. Therefore, consuming enough protein can help promote hair growth. To get enough protein, the body needs at least 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. Foods rich in protein include lean meats, eggs, milk, and legumes.

Additionally, some studies suggest that fish-derived protein supplements may reduce hair loss and increase hair thickness in women with thinning hair.

Zinc

Low zinc levels can cause a type of hair loss called telogen effluvium. This condition is often reversible. Some research suggests that as little as 50 mg of zinc per day may help improve hair loss in women. Foods rich in zinc include oysters, beef, chicken, dark chocolate, and beans.

Iron

Iron is an essential mineral in cell division, helping cells, including hair follicle cells, to divide more quickly. Low iron levels can lead to many health abnormalities, such as pale skin, brittle nails, and hair loss.

Adult men should consume at least 8 mg of iron per day. Meanwhile, women aged 19 to 50 need at least 18 mg per day, and women over 51 need 8 mg per day.

People can get iron through food or iron supplements. Foods rich in iron include red meat, liver, shellfish, beans, quinoa, and spinach.

Selen

Interestingly, both selenium deficiency and excess can cause hair loss. The recommended daily selenium intake for an adult is 55 micrograms. Foods rich in selenium include seafood, eggs, meat, brown rice, sunflower seeds, and cottage cheese, according to Verywell Health .
