The US is preparing for a major storm.

According to the NHC, the area affected by the storm winds could stretch approximately 290 km, from the Florida peninsula to southern Georgia. Coastal cities where the storm makes landfall could face high waves and storm surges. Hurricane Helene is also forecast to bring heavy rainfall, with amounts potentially reaching 381 mm, leading to flooding in many areas.

Given the unpredictable nature of Hurricane Helene, US authorities have declared a state of emergency in several states, including Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. In Florida, residents in some areas have been evacuated, many schools and businesses have temporarily closed, and more than 800 flights have been canceled before the storm made landfall.
