The US proposes imposing new tariffs on 60 economies.

Not only are geopolitical tensions in the Middle East rising, but global trade risks are also showing signs of heating up again. The US Trade Representative's office has just proposed imposing additional tariffs of 10 to 12.5% on goods from 60 economies, including major partners such as the European Union (EU), Japan, and China.

This measure was introduced under Section 301 of the Trade Act, after Washington concluded that these countries did not effectively prohibit or regulate goods that use forced labor, creating inequality for American workers. The US Trade Representative's office is soliciting comments until July 6th and is scheduled to hold hearings on July 7th before making a final decision. The European Union immediately voiced its opposition, stating that this move by the US was unreasonable.

China has also voiced its opposition to unilateral tariff measures and rejected allegations of forced labor. Meanwhile, Canada, the UK, and Taiwan have stated they will continue working with Washington to protect existing trade agreements.

One notable point is that the proposed new tariffs come with a very broad list of exemptions. Items already subject to tariffs under U.S. national security regulations, such as steel, aluminum, copper, automobiles and auto parts, will not be subject to additional tariffs. In addition, a range of essential products such as crude oil, petroleum products, rare earth elements, pharmaceuticals, organic chemicals, beef, coffee, fruits, vegetables, and aircraft parts are also excluded from the tariffs.

The USTR will accept public comments until July 6th and hold a public hearing on July 7th before making a final decision. If approved, the new tariffs could become one of the biggest trade moves by the Trump administration in its current term, while also increasing tensions with many of America's key economic partners globally.
