OPPORTUNITY TO ELEVATE YOURSELF
Back in early 2025, speaking on ESPN, Australia's coach Tony Popovic expressed his desire to see the Australian team compete in the AFF Cup. According to him, the AFF Cup is a very attractive tournament, and he wanted his players to have the opportunity to gain experience. However, since joining the AFF, the Australian team has never participated in the region's biggest tournament. There are many reasons for this, including the strong opposition from Thailand and Singapore to the decision to grant Australia the rights and obligations of an AFF team. Their argument is that the Australian team is too strong; if they play in the AFF Cup, no one will be able to compete, and Southeast Asian teams will lose their chance to win the championship.
However, when reviewing youth tournaments like the U.17 and U.19 Southeast Asian Championships, which feature Australian teams, experts and fans alike recognize that their presence makes the tournaments significantly more attractive and higher-quality. With their physique and refined technique, Australian players have created thrilling matches against top regional rivals like Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia whenever they face off; simultaneously, they provide other Southeast Asian teams with opportunities to gain experience and improve their skills by adopting modern, world -class playing styles. In the U.17 Southeast Asian semi-final on April 22nd, Vietnam and Australia produced what was arguably the most exciting match of the tournament, with spectacular attacking exchanges. Furthermore, the presence of the Australian U.17 team has truly elevated the tournament's quality and provided the Vietnamese team with valuable experience before the U.17 Asian Championship finals in May.
URGENT INVITATION TO PLAY FOR AFF CUP
Previously, the Australian women's team had participated in the AFF Women's Cup, albeit with a youth squad. For example, at the 2025 AFF Women's Cup, the Australian U23 team won the championship after defeating Myanmar 1-0 in the final. Their tall stature and strong tackling ability gave the Australian women's players an advantage over their regional opponents. Their journey to the championship was very convincing, losing only one match and winning the other four, most notably a 2-1 victory against the Vietnamese women's team in the semi-finals. This was clearly valuable experience for the remaining teams in the region, providing an opportunity to compete against a team that has participated in the Women's World Cup eight times.

The Australian team is currently ranked 27th in the world.

Therefore, there's no reason for AFF member countries to delay inviting Australia to the AFF Cup; in fact, the sooner the better. Having Australia participate might cost many teams their chance of winning, but in return, the remaining teams like Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc., will gain more than they lose by playing exciting matches against the strongest team in the continent. Believe me, Southeast Asian fans would rather enjoy exciting matches between Vietnam and Australia or Thailand and Australia than endure matches between Vietnam and Brunei or Laos. Furthermore, with the tournament moving to the summer, Australia will have even more favorable conditions to participate. In particular, the AFF could invite another team from Oceania, New Zealand, to the AFF Cup, as, like Australia, they have very few competitions to participate in, which could help improve the professional quality of teams in the Southeast Asian region.
To escape the less-than-pleasant label of being a "regional league," Southeast Asian football teams need to "courageously" make a historic transformation as soon as possible, as this will only benefit regional football.
