According to Kyiv Post, Romania began building the largest military base of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Europe. The project has an area of more than 2.800 hectares to expand the Mihail Kogălniceanu base No. 57 of the Romanian Air Force, located near the port city of Constanta on the Black Sea coast.
The plan for the development of the site includes the construction of an airstrip, weapons storage, hangars, as well as social infrastructure: schools, kindergartens, shops and hospitals; with the aim of permanently deploying up to 10.000 NATO soldiers and their families. Total construction costs are estimated at 2,5 billion EUR (2,7 billion USD).
Romania has long been an important center supporting NATO military alliance operations in the Black Sea. Thousands of US soldiers have moved through Romania to perform training and security missions since the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out in February 2.
In terms of scale, the new NATO base in Romania is significantly larger than the Deveselu military base No. 99, where elements of the US Aegis Ashore missile defense system are deployed, and is even larger in scale. US Air Force base in Ramstein, Germany.
