
Sticky rice variety 415 takes root in the countryside.
Recognized as a national variety since 1987, glutinous rice variety 415 can be cultivated in both seasons of the year. With its distinctive aroma, high stickiness, and consistent rice quality, products from this rice variety are always popular in the market.
About a decade ago, farmers in Binh Giang commune began cultivating glutinous rice variety 415. Through practical cultivation, this rice variety has shown good adaptability to local soil conditions. Mr. Hoang Huu Bac, Director of the Long Xuyen Agricultural Service Cooperative, said that in the 2025-2026 winter-spring crop season, the cooperative will plant approximately 260 hectares of rice, with over 50% of the area being glutinous rice variety 415.
According to Mr. Bac, the stable economic efficiency is the reason why more and more households are choosing this rice variety. For the next cropping season, the Long Xuyen Agricultural Service Cooperative plans to establish six concentrated production zones, each with a minimum of 10 hectares dedicated to cultivating glutinous rice variety 415. This will be an important foundation for improving product quality and gradually forming a large-scale commercial production area.
Besides providing a stable source of income, the concentrated 415 sticky rice fields have also contributed to changing the production mindset of the people. From small-scale, fragmented farming, many households have participated in concentrated production areas, creating favorable conditions for the synchronized application of technical advancements and product consumption linkages.
Enhance value

While rice production used to rely primarily on experience and manual labor, many farming processes in Binh Giang commune have now been mechanized.
Although a high-quality rice variety, glutinous rice 415 still has some limitations, such as being prone to lodging and susceptible to blast disease in unfavorable weather conditions. To improve production efficiency, Binh Giang commune is promoting the application of science and technology in the fields. One of the noticeable changes is the expansion of tray seedling cultivation and machine transplanting.
According to Mr. Hoang Huu Bac, during the recent winter-spring crop season, the cooperative had about 80 hectares of glutinous rice variety 415 that were planted using machines. In practice, these areas yielded 10-20 kg/sao more than manual planting, while also significantly reducing labor costs.
In addition to mechanizing the planting process, many areas are also using drones to spray pesticides. The application of technology helps reduce labor, improve production efficiency, and ensure sufficient time for crop care.
According to Mr. Vu Van Tien, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Binh Giang commune, in the 2025-2026 winter-spring crop season, the entire commune will plant 1,346 hectares of rice, including 388 hectares of glutinous rice variety 415. This is one of the high-quality rice varieties commonly grown in the locality. Based on actual production, glutinous rice 415 grows well, the plants are strong and healthy, the grains are plump, and it has relatively high resistance to pests and diseases, with an average yield of about 68 quintals/hectare.
Along with innovations in farming techniques, the post-harvest service system is also becoming increasingly sophisticated. Numerous large-scale drying facilities and a network of rice mills in the commune and surrounding areas facilitate the purchase, storage, and sale of paddy rice after harvest.
Behind the rice stalks laden with grain lies a transformation from small-scale production to commercial production, from manual labor to comprehensive mechanization. These changes are contributing to increasing the value of glutinous rice variety 415, providing a more stable income for the people, and creating a foundation for building a sustainable commercial glutinous rice production area in the coming years.
