What if life isn't brilliant?

The proud rose, born and raised as if destined for a single bloom, gathers its entire life to offer its fragrance and beauty. The cactus, rooted in the arid desert, carefully gathers every drop of water, transforming itself into sharp thorns to survive, yet at some point still blossoms with delicate flowers, a testament that pain can also be transformed into beauty. Some palm trees live for centuries in silence, their blossoming marking the end of their lives. Bamboo blooms in the dry season, then withers. Cicadas lie deep underground for years, only to sing their buzzing songs during a brief summer… All things in this transient world seem to carry within them a single yearning: to be themselves, to shine brightly, even if only once.

So what if one's life isn't brilliant?

That question, perhaps, is not only for plants, but also for humans, those who are always obsessed with the two words "blooming."

People grow up surrounded by comparisons, expectant gazes, and dreams of "becoming someone," of having a moment of brilliance in the crowd. It's as if life is wasted without that one moment of brilliance. Therefore, they yearn to be a flower, to shine brightly, even if only once.

But then, there are people who choose to be like a leaf. I've thought about that before. By accepting myself as a leaf, I also accept a life that isn't as brilliant as people often say.

Leaves don't possess the striking colors and fragrances of flowers, nor the beautiful, unusual shapes that would make people stop and gaze. Leaves are born, grow green for a season, then wither and fall, so silently that sometimes no one even remembers their existence. But leaves have also experienced many colors in their lives. Young leaves turn reddish-pink then a soft green, trembling in the first days of sunlight. Mature leaves are darker, thicker, silently photosynthesizing, sustaining life for the entire tree. Old leaves turn yellow, then red, carrying within them the quiet beauty of the changing seasons—a beauty that is not noisy, not ostentatious, but if one slows down enough, they will find it deeply beautiful and heart-wrenching. And when they fall, leaves don't disappear; they return to the earth, decompose, and become nutrients to nourish the very tree that gave birth to them. When does a leaf's life truly shine? Leaves don't have a period of brilliance in the conventional sense, no moment of bursting forth to be admired, no season to name, no peak to proudly remember. Leaves simply… live, living from the time they are tiny buds, cautiously unfolding, living through lush green days, standing still and working tirelessly, living until they wither, change color, and fall. And even after falling, they continue to live in a different way, silently dissolving into the earth.

If viewed in that way, yes, the leaf doesn't have a period of brilliance. But precisely because there is no "peak of brilliance," its entire life is a quiet, enduring straight line.

And perhaps, the point isn't whether "the leaf is vibrant or not," but that a leaf doesn't need to be vibrant to have a fulfilling life. If you look closely, a leaf's life is not meaningless; it just doesn't choose to be vibrant in the dazzling sense.

A life that isn't brilliant is by no means a meaningless life.

Sometimes it's just a life… that's fulfilling in a very different way.
