In an interview with Russian media on May 13, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia has never politicized the economy or existing agreements with Japan, expressing no objection if Japan wishes to import Russian crude oil.
This is the first statement from a Russian official regarding Japan's purchase of Russian oil, disregarding sanctions imposed by many Western countries.
Amidst the ongoing tensions in Iran, the Japanese government is pushing to find alternative supply sources outside the Middle East.
According to TASS, last week, crude oil produced from the "Sakhalin-2" oil and gas development project in Russia's Far East arrived at a refinery in Ehime Prefecture, Japan. Subsequently, Idemitsu Kosan Group purchased another shipment of Russian crude oil, becoming the second Japanese company to make such a transaction since the conflict in the Middle East disrupted global energy supplies.
The transaction was carried out at the request of Japan's Energy and Resources Agency to ensure a stable supply of petroleum products.
