According to data from specialized agencies, from the beginning of May 2026 to the present, African Swine Fever (ASF) has occurred in 209 households in 67 villages of 22 communes and wards in the province. A total of 843 pigs have died and been culled (an increase of 580 compared to April 2026). Currently, 5 communes have declared ASF outbreaks: Trang Dinh, Thuy Hung, Yen Binh, Mau Son, and Diem He.
In Thuy Hung commune, which has experienced the highest number of outbreaks recently, disease control measures are being implemented urgently. Ms. Duong Thi Phuong, Deputy Director in charge of the commune's Public Service Center, stated: From the beginning of May 2026 to the present, African Swine Fever (ASF) has occurred in 91 households across 13 out of 27 villages in the commune, resulting in a total of 257 pig deaths. Immediately after detecting the outbreaks, the unit coordinated with local authorities to implement disease prevention and control measures according to regulations; guided and supervised the disposal of infected pigs; quarantined the outbreak areas; and instructed livestock farmers to carry out sanitation, disinfection, and sterilization of barns and surrounding environments to minimize the risk of disease spread.
During the outbreak, the Thuy Hung Commune Public Service Center also distributed over 78 liters of chemicals to villages for disease prevention and control at disposal pits, livestock breeding areas, and high-risk areas; and guided people on the correct procedures and techniques for using the chemicals. Currently, the center continues to coordinate with villages to review pig herds eligible for vaccination, and organize catch-up vaccinations against African Swine Fever (ASF) for those that have not been vaccinated or newly emerged cases.
Mr. Ha Duc Trinh's family in Ban Moi village, Thuy Hung commune, is one of the households affected by African Swine Fever (ASF). Mr. Trinh stated: "In May 2026, two of my family's pigs showed symptoms of high fever and loss of appetite... As soon as we noticed the pigs' unusual symptoms, we reported it to the village head, who then informed the authorities. After the specialized agency took samples for testing and confirmed they were positive for the ASF virus, all infected pigs were destroyed according to regulations. Despite the losses, I am determined to strictly comply to prevent the disease from spreading to other households."
Not only in the communes where outbreaks have occurred, but also in many communes and wards that have not yet recorded outbreaks, preventive measures are being proactively implemented. Mr. Hoang Van Tang, Director of the Public Service Center of Khanh Khe commune, said: Although no outbreaks have occurred in the commune, it has been determined that African Swine Fever (ASF) has a high risk of outbreaks and spread at this time. Therefore, the unit has advised the People's Committee of the commune to issue a document focusing on the vigorous implementation of measures to prevent and control ASF. These measures focus on strengthening disease surveillance on livestock; preparing sufficient supplies and chemicals; organizing supplementary vaccinations for newly born livestock; regularly disseminating information through the public address system, guiding people on cleaning livestock pens, spraying disinfectants periodically, and strictly controlling the transportation and sale of pigs...
According to expert assessments, the current alternating sunny and rainy weather, along with high humidity, creates favorable conditions for disease outbreaks. Furthermore, most outbreaks occur in small-scale livestock farms, where people restock their herds by purchasing pigs of unknown origin. Given the complex developments of African Swine Fever (ASF), the Department of Agriculture and Environment (DARD) has directed specialized units to coordinate with the People's Committees of communes and wards to focus on implementing disease prevention and control measures.
Mr. Duong Doan Doanh, Deputy Head of the Livestock, Veterinary and Fisheries Sub-Department, Department of Agriculture and Environment, said: "As soon as outbreaks were detected, the unit coordinated with the People's Committees of the communes to cordon off the affected areas, destroy infected pigs, and carry out disinfection and sterilization in the affected areas and surrounding areas. At the same time, we strengthened disease surveillance and strictly controlled the transportation of pigs and pig products to limit the risk of disease spread."
Previously, the relevant authorities had proactively implemented measures to minimize disease outbreaks, such as vaccination and the distribution of disinfectants for spraying. From March 2026 to the present, the specialized unit has vaccinated 40,000 animals against African Swine Fever (ASF), with over 1,000 animals vaccinated by the public; and disinfected over 9.1 million square meters in villages, hamlets, and market areas across 62 communes and wards.
According to expert assessments, the weather will continue to be unpredictable in the coming period, creating favorable conditions for pathogens to survive and spread in the environment. Therefore, along with the decisive involvement of all levels and functional agencies, the proactive awareness of livestock farmers plays a particularly important role in disease prevention and control.
