Prompt action
Recently, in Ninh Cam village (Tan Dan commune, Soc Son district), a case of a person being bitten by a dog was recorded. The dog was later confirmed to have rabies.
Immediately, the Tan Dan commune authorities coordinated with the Soc Son district Agricultural Services Center to handle (destroy) the infected dog according to regulations. People bitten by the dog were also promptly given vaccinations.

According to Ngo Thanh Binh, Chairman of the Tan Dan Commune People's Committee, there are currently more than 3,000 dogs in the commune. To prevent the spread of rabies, the local authorities have coordinated with the Soc Son District Agricultural Services Center to vaccinate the dogs against rabies.
“To date, more than 1,000 dogs in 5 out of 12 villages in Tan Dan commune have been vaccinated against rabies. We are actively coordinating with relevant units to vaccinate the remaining dogs…” - Mr. Ngo Thanh Binh added.
Don't be complacent.
According to statistics, the total number of dogs and cats in Soc Son district is over 83,000, with more than 36,000 households raising them; of which: approximately 69,000 are dogs, and the rest are cats. This is also the locality with the largest total number of dogs and cats in Hanoi .
Currently, dog and cat breeding in Soc Son district is mainly small-scale for guarding homes; a few households breed them for commercial purposes. In addition, in densely populated and economically developed town areas, dogs and cats are kept as pets.
According to Do Minh Tuan, Vice Chairman of the Soc Son District People's Committee, in recent years, the locality has paid special attention to the prevention and control of animal diseases in general, and among dogs and cats in particular. However, due to the large total number of dogs and cats, the vast area, and its proximity to many provinces, management has been challenging.
Currently, along with directing departments to coordinate with local authorities to organize thorough vaccination for dogs and cats, Soc Son district requests the strengthening of information dissemination and guidance for dog and cat owners to closely monitor the health of their animals; and to ensure that dogs and cats are kept confined and not allowed to roam freely as per regulations.
Representatives from the Soc Son District Agricultural Service Center advise that if people discover dogs or cats that are sick, dead, or show signs of rabies, they must immediately report it to the local authorities, veterinary staff, or the nearest veterinary or health agency to take timely response and handling measures.
Recommendations for dog and cat bites: If bitten or scratched by a dog or cat suspected of having rabies, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean running water for about 10-15 minutes, then disinfect with 70% alcohol or other disinfectants to minimize the amount of rabies virus at the bite site. At the same time, immediately report the incident to the commune People's Committee, health station, or veterinary officer for guidance on safe handling.
