Supermarkets are making a splash.
In mid-November, the Ho Chi Minh City Commercial Cooperative Union ( Saigon Co.op ) opened the Co.opXtra Ta Quang Buu hypermarket (District 8), covering an area of over 3,000 square meters and offering more than 30,000 items, from necessities and consumer goods to cosmetics and fashion. Hundreds of customers visit and shop there daily. In addition to attractive promotions and discounts, the hypermarket also offers new services such as one-hour home delivery and automated checkout counters.

Saigon Co.op also opened the Co.opXtra Long Binh hypermarket (Thu Duc City). This location has a business area of 4,000 m2 with a total investment of nearly 100 billion VND in equipment and goods, and operates on a streamlined model, optimizing artificial intelligence and modern technology, focusing on enhancing customer experience.
Recently, the Aeon Ta Quang Buu department store and supermarket (District 8) opened with an area of nearly 7,000m2. Aeon Ta Quang Buu applies technology in almost all aspects, from cashier counters and self-service kiosks to smart lockers, along with modern services such as free Japanese-style gift wrapping and ice machines for preserving fresh food. It attracts a large number of customers, especially young people, who come to enjoy themselves, eat, and shop every day.
Speaking to reporters on November 26th, Mr. Nguyen Tuan, Deputy General Director of Saigon Trading Corporation (Satra), said that they are finalizing the last steps to prepare for the opening of the Satra Vo Van Kiet Shopping Center (District 6) at the end of this year. This hypermarket has a construction area of nearly 30,000 square meters, a leasable area of 15,000 square meters, along with a Satramart self-service supermarket area of over 1,500 square meters.
According to Mr. Tuan, Satra Vo Van Kiet Shopping Center is a modern shopping and entertainment space that meets all the needs of people in District 6 and surrounding areas. The main product categories here include food, entertainment, fashion , accessories, jewelry, a children's play area, and a multi-category supermarket.
Abundant Tet goods, massive discounts!
Along with accelerating the opening of new retail outlets, retailers expect to bring goods closer and faster to consumers, especially during the Tet holiday shopping season. Currently, supermarkets are busily preparing Tet goods in large quantities with many attractive promotions. A representative from Satra stated that the company has been working with suppliers for months to ensure the price and supply of essential goods before, during, and after Tet 2025. Accordingly, the total value of essential food and grocery items stockpiled for Tet 2025 has increased by 15-20% compared to last year. This retail system also commits to ensuring a wide variety of goods, quality, and reasonable prices, preventing shortages, sudden price increases, and substandard goods during the peak shopping season.
Meanwhile, Saigon Co.op is allocating approximately 10,000 billion VND to prepare for Tet (Lunar New Year), an increase of 20-50% compared to last year (depending on the product category). The majority of the budget prioritizes price-stabilized goods such as rice, sugar, cooking oil, pork, poultry, eggs, and specialty products. In the days leading up to Tet, Co.opmart supermarkets also organize numerous mobile sales trips to remote areas and regions affected by storms and floods.
According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thang, Deputy General Director of Saigon Co.op, this retailer has the advantage of a network of supermarkets and convenience stores stretching from the South to the North, so it will leverage this to ensure sufficient supply and the best prices. "We have many deep discount programs and cooperate with suppliers to reduce profit margins so that goods are not only stable in price but also cheaper than usual," Mr. Thang said.
Mr. Phan Van Dung, Deputy General Director of Vissan Company, said that the company has prepared a budget of 540 billion VND, an 8% increase compared to the same period last year, to implement the plan for preparing goods for Tet 2025. Of this, Vissan expects to supply nearly 930 tons of fresh food to the market; the figure for processed food is approximately 3,700 tons (a 5-8% increase compared to Tet 2024). “In the first nine months of 2024, purchasing power decreased by 10-20%. Many experts expect purchasing power to pick up in the fourth quarter and during the 2025 Lunar New Year. However, we anticipate a 10% increase. This increase is still not as high as last year. Therefore, in addition to improving product quality, businesses themselves must have a budget for promotional programs and deep discounts of up to 30% to attract customers and achieve their targets, as this year is truly challenging,” Mr. Dung said.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Hoa, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Business Association, affirmed that the city is accelerating the implementation of stimulus programs for the year-end shopping season. Currently, lending interest rates are favorable, and banks are actively inviting loan applications, so the pressure on capital is no longer a major issue.
According to Mr. Bui Ta Hoang Vu, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade, from now until the end of the year, the Department will focus on trade promotion and supporting businesses in expanding their markets to meet the consumption needs during the peak season at the end of the year and the Lunar New Year 2025.
On November 26th, in an interview with reporters, Mr. Nguyen Duc Lenh, Deputy Director of the State Bank of Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City branch, stated that banks in Ho Chi Minh City are currently lending nearly 10,000 billion VND to 37 businesses participating in the bank-linked program (including businesses involved in price stabilization and those in the supply chain) at low interest rates (averaging around 4% per year). In the last two months of the year, banks will continue to support market stabilization through loans, contributing to price stability for goods, especially essential consumer goods, during the year-end and Lunar New Year 2025.
